Lake Wyangan, Griffith New South Wales

Lake Wyangan

Lake Wyangan is located a short 10 minutes drive out of Griffith in NSW.

The Lake is used for fishing and boating and the locals told me the fishing here is good.

The park area at Lake Wyangan is great for BBQ’s or picnics and also hosts a maximum 72 hour campground for campers.

Lake Wyangan Camping Facilities

There is lots or space although mostly the Lake Wyangan camping area is on sloping land.

Facilities include an amenities block including Toilets and Showers.

There are also BBQ’s in place to use and bins are available.

5 Essentials – Camping Accessories

A good Tent or Swag is the first decision for going camping. We like the Coleman Tent from Tentworld or the Wanderer 7 Man Tent from BCF. For a Swag, we were so close to buying the Kings Double Swag from 4WD Supacentre .

We like our BCF Wanderers Camping Chair which gets a lot of use as we travel Australia.

No more lugging around a huge BBQ and gas bottle now that we have a brilliant Gasmate Dual Burner Butane Cooktop from Tentworld

A good Portable Fridge Freezer we have found to keep the beers cold and steaks frozen are the Kings 70 L Fridge Freezer in the budget range, the Waeco 75L Dual Zone Fridge Freezer or the ever popular and long lasting Engel 75L Fridge Freezer.

A good quality Hand Held UHF is ideal and I like this Uniden UH750 5 watt UHF for long range and quality. The 5 watt range will give you maximum distance, especially if you need help!

Things to See and Do in around Griffith

Hermit’s Cave and Lookout

While you are in Griffith, be sure to check out Hermit’s Cave and Lookout at Scenic Hill.

It is really interesting to see the cave, gardens and chapel where Italian Migrant Valeri Ricetti lived as a recluse from the 1920’s to 1952.

You also get a magnificent view of Griffith from the lookout as well!

Fairey Firefly

The Fairey Firefly was acquired from the HMAS Albatross in Nowra.

The aircraft was built in Britain in 1941 as a World War II Reconnaissance Aircraft. You’ll now find the Fairey Firefly proudly on display in the middle of Griffith.

Donald Bruce Mackay Monument

In the 1970’s Griffith was part of a growing marijuana trade. Local businessman and politician Donald Mackay informed police of a large crop and became a target for the local criminal organisations.

He left the local Hotel car park after drinks with friends and has never been seen again since then.

In 1984, the Coroner ruled he had been murdered.

The monument in the main street is in memory of Donald Bruce Mackay.

Rollingstone Camping, Free Camp with all the Facilities

The Rollingstone Camping Ground named Vincent “Bushy” Parker Park after a local war hero, Flight Lieutenant Vincent “Bushy” Parker, is a great place to stay just north of Townsville in Queensland.

For a Free Camp, the Rollingstone Camping area has a lot on offer, loads of facilities with easy access and plenty of space to park.

It’s simple to find however some people do report that google sends them directions which takes you under a low bridge.

Read on and we will tell you how to get there safely.

Rollingstone Camping Ground Facilities

While the nearby Rollingstone Beach Front Resort offers all the amazing bells and whistles for an overnight stay the Rollingstone Camping area is a basic Free camp but very good.

There are a number of potable water taps available providing drinking water to use.

A toilet block is onsite and is regularly maintained and kept clean by Townsville Council. There is also a dump point at the Rollingstone Camping Grounds.

Rollingstone Camping Ground Amenities and Dump Point
Rollingstone Camping Ground BBQs and Picnic Tables

Picnic tables are also available along with a BBQ and bins are here too. Please ensure all rubbish is placed in the bins and the area is kept clean and tidy.

We had 3 bars of 4G Telstra coverage while we were at the Camping area.

There are steps down to the nice, shallow creek alongside the Rollingstone Camping area which is perfect to wade into and cool off on a warm day.

Other Facilities near the Rollingstone Camping Area

Rollingstone has it’s own small general store offering fuel, food, a post office and a few other supplies.

Caravan Parks

Port Lincoln Caravan Park, South Australia

Port Lincoln Tourist Park

We had to look for a good Port Lincoln Caravan Park when MACKS our Golden Retriever got sick in Ceduna and needed urgent treatment.

We found the Port Lincoln Tourist Park the perfect place to stay.

Port Lincoln is located on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia and is considered Australia’s Seafood capital.

Our site had the most amazing ocean views over Boston Bay and is just a short stroll to a small jetty where we caught plenty of squid.

Fresh Calamari was an enjoyable part of our diet here at the Port Lincoln Caravan Park.

Port Lincoln Tourist Park Campsite

Port Lincoln Caravan Park Facilities

The Caravan Park Free Wifi is good too, which isn’t often the case with Caravan Parks.

There are several amenities blocks which are very good, although not modern, with hot showers and excellent strong water pressure.

Two excellent camp kitchens are also on site with under cover BBQ’s, fridge and TV.

The staff at the Port Lincoln Caravan Park were really friendly and great to us, remaining patient as we dealt with our sick dog.

There is also a kids playground for the boys and girls to enjoy.

A Dump point is also available.

Port Lincoln Tourist Park

The Port Lincoln Caravan Park is set on a hillside and therefore some sites, including much of the unpowered section, is located on sloping grounds and may not be level.

We would recommend asking to go for a walk and choose the site that best suits you before being allocated a spot or setting up.

Stunning sunrises are the best part of the day as it rises over the ocean providing the most spectacular views.

MACKS at Port Lincoln Caravan Park
MACKS recuperating at Port Lincoln Tourist Park after her sever case of Geratric Vestibular Disease

Are pets allowed at this Port Lincoln Caravan Park?

The Port Lincoln Tourist Park is pet friendly and we stayed here whilst our dog MACKS was recovering from Geriatric Vestibular Disease.

We can also very highly recommend the Lincoln Veterinary Centre, they were superb in diagnosing and looking after MACKS.

Keep an eye out around the grounds for the Bunny Rabbits that come out to feed during the afternoon.

Update: September 2021
Powered sites range from $35 to $40 per night.
Unpowered sites are $30 a night with fantastic bay views

Our stay here was 14-22 December 2016.

Proceed through 2 roundabouts and continue straight on Tasman Terrace before turning left onto Hindmarsh Street.

In 150 metres turn right, then in 50 metres turn left and in 20 metres the Port Lincoln Caravan Park will be on your left.

5 Essentials – Outside RV Accessories

  1. To plug your RV with standard 15amp in to standard residential 10amp power source you will need a converter. We love our waterproof Ampfibian and after over 4 years it’s still perfect.
  2. Most people carry a Generator for back up power. 4wd Supacentre has a good low cost and popular generator while the Yamaha 2000w is a robust yet quiet excellent performer.
  3. A 20m 15amp Power Lead will ensure you reach your power source in Caravan Parks and Campgrounds.
  4. You will want a good blue Drinking Water Hose. Your typical green garden hose is not suitable for drinking from.
  5. A 4 way tap handle will help you find water whenever you need it
Makaybe Diva Statue

Things to do in and around Port Lincoln

Makaybe Diva Statue

Makaybe Diva is the first racehorse to achieve 3 wins in the Melbourne Cup and these three wins were in consecutive years -2003, 2004 and 2005.

Add to this fabulous record, Makaybe Diva is also the only mare to ever win more than one Melbourne Cup.

Local Port Lincoln artist Ken Martin who sculpted the bronze statue took 9 months to complete the monument which was officially unveiled in 2006.

Check out the statue of this awesome racehorse which stands proudly at the Port Lincoln waterfront.

Flinders Archway Port Lincoln

Flinders Archway

The Flinders Archway commemorates the famous navigator Matthew Flinders. After setting sail on an expedition from England Flinders first arrived on the west coast of South Australia in 1802.

He continued to explore, map and name the South Australian coastline. In 1892, Flinders named Port Lincoln in honour of his native Province.

The stone archway was erected in May 1936. and a statue of Matthew Flinders RN and his cat Trim, donated to the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum by the Lang Foundation, was unveiled in February 2017.

Axel Senross Maritime Museum

Axel Stenross Maritime Museum

The Axel Stenross Maritime Museum right on the waterfront is full of restored historic vessels, marine artefacts and assorted relics.

Axel, a Finnish Ships Carpenter sailed to Port Lincoln in 1927 to load grain and decided to stay.

Knowledgeable volunteers and unique interpretive displays throughout the museum tell Axel’s the amazing story.

You can also discover the lost art of wooden boat building, his original living quarters, workshops and the still operating slipway.

Open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 9.30am – 4pm and Saturdays and Public Holidays from 1pm – 4.30pm.

Magnificent views of Port Lincoln from Winter Hill Lookout

Winter Hill Lookout

From the Winters Hill Lookout, the views of Port Lincoln, the bay and Boston Island are simply amazing.

To reach the Winters Hill Lookout, it is simply a short 5 minute drive from the Port Lincoln CBD and was easily accessible in our motorhome.

Camp Grounds

1770 Camping Ground, Queensland

1770 Camping Ground

If you are looking to go camping in 1770 Qld then the 1770 Camping Ground is perfectly located on Round Hill Creek with the most stunning Sunsets that you will see on Australia’s East coast.

1770 is one of the most amazing small beachside towns on the Queensland coastline.

There’s no shortage of fantastic beaches, superb fishing, swimming and did I mention spectacular sunsets?

Agnes Water is just 5 minutes away and is the furthest north in Qld where surfers can catch a wave.

With a bit of wind or swell people travel to 1770 and Agnes Water to get out their long boards and catch a wave around the Agnes Water headland.

1770 Beachfront Camping
1770 Sunset
One of the many amazing 1770 Sunsets

1770 Beach Camping

1770 Camping is limited to the 1770 Camping Ground and a Caravan Park with further Caravan Parks and Campgrounds located at Agnes Water nearby.

The 1770 Camping Ground offers a range of accommodation options.

Beachfront sites are available and come with power, a fire pit and the most magnificent views.

Beachfront sites do not have access to hook up to water or to release grey water.

1770 Camping Ground

1770 Camping Facilities

Cheaper sites are available back from the water in the 1770 Camping Ground and whilst all sites come with power you can choose to go unpowered and not use the electricity.

The Camping Ground also has a cafe and takeaway shop which provides meals and drinks plus some basic necessities.

Keep your eye out and you will see dolphins in the river and kookaburras around the campsite as we did.

1770 from above
Town of 1770

1770, like many beach places, can at times attract midges, if so apply insect repellent and cover up.

Open fire pits are available and we enjoyed a campfire at sunset with our neighbouring campers.

We didn’t use the amenities block but the toilets and showers block did looked fairly basic.

I did have phone coverage with full access to Telstra network and just 1 bar on my Vodafone.

Is the 1770 Camping Ground Dog Friendly?

The park is not dog friendly and does not allow pets.

Our first time to 1770 we had our Golden Retriever with us and were therefore unable to stay here.

1770 campfire

This is an awesome location, enjoy the video for more details.

The cost to stay at the 1770 Camping Ground was $46 per night for a powered river front site and $41 for non river front powered sites.

Update March 2021:
Beachfront sites are $50 per night and $54 a night during Qld holidays and long weekends for 2 adults.
Powered sites are $45 per night and $51 a night during Qld holidays and long weekends for 2 adults.
Unpowered is $40 per night and $47 a night during Qld holidays and long weekends for 2 adults.
Children aged 4-15 years are $10 extra per night.
Extra Adults are $14 per night.

Our stay was 3rd June 2018

1770 LARC! Tours

While visiting 1770, be sure to go out on one of the LARC tours, they are fabulous.

A LARC is an amphibious vehicle capable of travelling over land and across water.

LARC vehicles are mostly used by the military and here in 1770 they are used to do tours of places usually very difficult to reach.

We have done the Full Day Paradise Tour which takes you right up to the Bustard Head Lighthouse and we have also taken a LARC Afternoon & Sunset tour which is amazing value and great fun.

Be sure to do the tour to the Bustard Lighthouse and race down the dunes of Middle Island.

We did this trip and loved it, a must do when in 1770 and Agnes Water.

Tips: Take some Kwells seasickness tablets in case of a bumpy ride and a warm jacket for the return trip.

Sunset Viewing

There are a few spots to enjoy the stunning sunsets at 1770.

At the 1770 Marina there are some great spots to sit, relax and enjoy the view.

There’s seating and you can bring along a bottle of wine or a beer and enjoy.

Otherwise you can grab some fish and chips next door while you witness the extraordinary views as the sun goes down.

Sunsets silohette

From the foreshore in front of the 1770 Beach Hotel there are BBQ’s and seating or plenty of space on the beach to watch the sunset.

With some stunning boats and the river in the foreground it all makes for a magnificent photo opportunity.

1770 Sunset at the Headland

The other great spot is the 1770 Headland.

From the point you can enjoy the incredible views down the River and across the ocean and capture some memorable photos.

Fishing Charter

1770 Fishing Charter

The ocean waters of 1770 provide the most amazing reef fishing opportunity.

I chose the Hooked on 1770 Fishing Charters Half Day charter and we managed to get on to some nice fish including this nice Red.

Next time I’ll have to choose the Full Day charter which gets you out further to the deeper reefs and more time for more great fishing.

We had spent so much time overseas we decided it was time to see our own truly amazing country and we needed to take some time to see everything it has to offer.

Our Aim is to inspire others to travel and help design the greatest adventure they can experience.

Photography and Socials

Our camera equipment we use for all our photos and videos are:

Samsung Note 10 Plus Phone – http://ebay.us/9vMXEH – Most of our photos are simply from our phones. The Samsung phone cameras are pretty insane. Our phones have 512gb storage in ours but the 256gb in this one is heaps. We have sourced this one which is approx $500 less than we paid for ours.

Canon 800d – https://ebay.to/2XQYnsk – the latest DSLR Canon 24mp camera, buy here to save.
Lenses – Canon 50mm lens – https://ebay.to/3nx5pyG  This is the lens I use the least, ideal for still, close up shots.
Canon 24-105mm lenshttps://ebay.us/br9MeO This is my all round, everyday use, zoom lens. Amazing quality, great price.
Canon 70-300mm lens – https://ebay.to/33xYeht – I use this one a lot for long range shots.
Sigma 10-20mm lenshttp://ebay.us/zWvfuI  – My wide angle lens for all my inside photos & video plus lots more, love this lens.

Our Go Pro 9 Hero Black – https://ebay.us/6CQOVC  –  is an awesome piece of equipment. I use this for all underwater, action video and some general use. Buy here brand new and great value.

Mavic Pro Platinum Drone – https://ebay.to/2ARPxTo  This is an absolute ripper of a drone. The Fly More Combo will provide you with everything you will need. I use this for all my aerial footage and this price is well below other retail stores.
