Tent Camping on Fraser and Moreton Island

What was it like camping in a tent for the best part of 4 of our last 5 weeks?

We loved it!!

Of course, the magnificent locations of Fraser Island and Moreton Island sure helped. But we really did love it.

Mostly we liked the simplicity.

Camping on Fraser Island

Camping in a Tent – Back to Basics

It brought us back to the basics of life and a greater feeling of closeness with nature.

We liked being so close to everything. Waking up and looking out the front opening of the tent straight out at the ocean. Watching as the sun took it’s first glimpse above the horizon as a new dawn began each day from our pillow was incredible.

Taking one step outside the tent and feeling the sand under our feet. The coolness of the sand and the unequivocal Australianism of sand between your toes first thing every day is amazing.

I loved being bare foot all day every day.

Putting up the tent for the first time on Fraser Island

Daily Routine

Our daily shower was an early morning swim in the ocean. We would wake around 5am, admire the sunrise, enjoy a wonderful breakfast before putting on some board shorts and Adele in her bikinis and enjoy the most liberating and amazing swim to start the day.

It is crazy just how amazing it would make you feel. Man I felt alive!!

Tent Camping and waking up to a magnificent sunrise on Fraser Island

In the afternoons we would rinse off under our solar shower and it was amazing how hot the water was after a day baking in the sun.

The tent held up really well to the rainy night we had on Fraser and a very windy night on Moreton.

We were in bed most nights at 7.30 and awake at Sunrise and we loved that.

Our new double burner stove was perfect and allowed us to cook a big variety of meals. Adele made the most amazing Pizza’s on the burner, they were super delicious!

Sleeping in the tent was so much cooler. Outside with the ocean breezes and an air bed that actually becomes cold through the night. We had to create a thick liner between the bed and us to keep ourselves warm during the night from the coolness of the air bed.

Being in a tent forces you outside. There’s not a lot to do inside the tent so you sleep in there and not much else. The rest of the day you are outside, experiencing adventure, interacting with nature and enjoying the beauty of the great Australian outdoors.

Our Camping Equipment:

We borrowed a mate’s Coleman Riverview 8 Tent. We wanted to keep the size to a minimum to save on space and weight and it was perfect for us for these camping trips.

There was plenty of room inside and the simplicity of it was awesome for packing and unpacking, especially as we setup 3 times as we moved around on Fraser Island.

My mate also lent us his PRIMUS 60L dual zone fridge/freezer plus his 200amp AGM battery to run it. This was a lifesaver and was so perfect for us. It drew little power and worked ridiculously well.

We had our Waeco 35L fridge which we ran from our 120amp Lithium battery. We ended up turning this one off after a few days and didn’t even take it to Moreton Island.

Tent Camping and waking up to the magnificent sunrises on Fraser Island

The portable toilet was a Kings model you can buy from the 4wd Supacentre. We paid just $79, heaps less than other ones we looked at. It was excellent and worked perfectly.

Our portable 2 burner cooktop is a Campmaster we bought on special from Big W for just $35. We really loved it and didn’t bother taking our Weber Baby Q with us and now don’t think we will need it. The Portable burner did everything we wanted and it’s so much more compact and easy to use.

Adele fishing on Moreton Island

For lighting we had our Ryobi 18v area light plus my awesome aircraft grade aluminum 1000 lumen torch. If needed we also had lighting from the canopy of the 4wd.

Our Solar shower was less than $10 from 4wd Supacentre and it also worked perfectly. Afternoon showers were fabulous and after the day in the sun the water was genuinely hot.

I did put a hole into our first one when on Fraser, it was my fault as I put it up on a branch with a broken branch behind it that punctured a hole, but at $9.95 it was no issue to replace it again.

Dingo checking out our campsite on Fraser Island

Camping Royalty

The Royal Chair that Queen Adele would sit and wave to passing 4wd’s was so good but sadly it too succumbed to a Dingo attack on Fraser Island and it had to go to Royal heaven. We got it on special at Big W for just $15 but it was the last one and now we can’t get another.

It was so comfy and we had to fill the base with water which gave it weight and kept it stable, unless of course you sit in it on top of a dune and it does backflips and rolls over and breaks your rib. Poor Adele, was so bloody funny though lol

Adele sitting in the Royal Chair waving to passing 4wds

It had been about 25 years since we last went camping in a tent and back then it was with an old tucker box with Dry Ice and we had to dig holes to go to the toilet. For cooking we had to lug around a gas bottle and stove and also a gas light. Camping is way easier today with the more modern and sophisticated tools at our disposal.

If you haven’t been camping in a tent recently, consider the opportunity to go back to basics and embrace life in it’s most simple form.

My Tip for Tent Camping: Check weather forecast first, it’s a lot less fun if it is raining and or there are gusting winds.

My 15 Favourite Driving Songs as I Travel

Favourite driving songs

Doing the Big Lap of Australia means a lot of hours driving our Highways. It’s a huge country and there can be long distances from one destination to another so I have my favourite driving songs as I travel.

Listening to great music helps keep me concentrating and my energy levels high.

My phone has hundreds of songs for the many times a good radio station isn’t available and I thought I’d share with you my favourite songs as I drive.

My original plan was a list of 10 but I couldn’t reduce it to just that few so it’s a Top 15. The list is not in any particular order.

Favourite driving songs

These aren’t necessarily my all time favourite songs, just the ones I love most when I’m driving and in the mood to whittle away some time by belting out some tunes.

If you see me driving and singing out loud, it’s probably one of these playing 🙂

What is your favourite song when driving?

1. Way out West – James Blundell & James Reyne

At one stage over our trip, I don’t remember exactly where it was, but I mentioned the words Way out West and it reminded me of this song. I quickly jumped on and downloaded it and it’s been a favourite since.

2. Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol

We were helping our friends renovate their house in Narrandera NSW before it went up for sale. I was mowing their ridiculously large backyard singing this song out loud, all the time thinking the sound of the mower was louder then me singing. Apparently not!!

Our friend Kerry said to me, “I don’t want to scare the buyers away” haha

3. Copperhead Road – Steve Earle

Just has to be on the Best driving song list!!

4. Life is a Highway – Tom Cochrane

Another one where recently I commented Life is a Highway and it took me back to this song. It’s a ripper and now I can’t help but sing it out loud.

5. Ride Like the Wind – Christopher Cross

My mate Jason just reminded me of this one and it goes straight to the Top of the list.

6. Zombie – The Cranberries

Wow, the voice, the pain, the message, the song. The song is in memory of 2 boys killed by IRA bombs in England in 1993. She sings this with such emotion it’s so hard not to feel it and sing with her. There’s no version better than hers and losing Dolores O’Riordan recently was a sad day.

7. Radar Love – Golden Earring

Play this and not get pumped up, I dare you. You’ll be belting out the tune in no time.

8. Sweet Home Alabama – Lynard Skynard

Great song that has stood the test of time. Has to be loud so you can sing loud too haha

9. Bustin Loose – Moving Pictures

Better known for their song What about Me, but for me this is my favourite song of theirs, I just love it.

10. My Immortal – Evanescence

The voice, the song. The songs writer said “My Immortal’ is a song of pain and despair caused by the loss of a family member or very close friend. We’ve all felt that pain and this song really resonates for me

11. Father & Son – Cat Stevens

This song makes me think of my sons as I travel. Cat Stevens sings the song in 2 voices, one as the Father and one as the son with a powerful message. The son wants to travel, Dad wants him to settle and think of his future. I give you the Legendary Cat Stevens.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-7c4VNGOgU

12. April Sun in Cuba – Dragon

No best of list for me can be without Dragon. One of my all time fave bands, watched them play so many times. Marc Hunter, was a crazy human, but what a voice. Such a sad day when we lost this legend.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHFFuukk9Y8

13. Hotel California – Eagles

How do you pick just one Eagles song?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wDfiCDoHy4

14. Fire Lake – Bob Seger

Another one who I could have picked any Bob Seger song and been happy with it. I am hoping that one day I may see him play live. Bit of a Bucket List item J

Bob Seger described the song as “The lyric is about taking risks. About risking love, chucking it all and just heading off with a bunch of wild people, whatever.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld1l4Ud7jp8&t=21s

15. Yesterdays Hero – John Paul Young

Gets me singing every time no matter my mood. We saw JPY at Wagga’s Rock at the Races and he is still as brilliant as ever.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVSEiveFY7g

Favourite Driving Songs Close Contenders

These are the ones to lose out from my list.

Jukebox Hero – Foreigner

Sounds of Then – Ganggajang

Solid Rock – Goanna

Jack & Diane – John Mellencamp

The Gambler – Kenny Rogers

Straight Lines – Silverchair

Learning to Fly – Tom Petty

You ruined me – The Veronicas

Walk of Life – Dire Straights

Here I go again – Whitesnake

Imagine – John Lennon

Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen

Piano Man – Billy Joel

Baker Street – Gerry Rafferty

Kryptonite – 3 Doors Down

Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin

And anything from Dr Hook, Boz Scaggs, Billy Joel, Dragon, Pink, Toto, AC/DC or The Angels could also easily have been there 🙂

What are some of your favourite driving songs?

Safe travels

Overcome the Fear and Do It Anyway

Indefinite Leave nearly never happened!! We had to overcome a lot of Fears to make it all happen and do it anyway.

I’ve never talked about this before, I’ve always just recalled how we made our decision and everything happened from there. But its actually not true!!

In a chat with Mike, another traveler, while we sat and enjoyed the view over the Murray River, I remembered the time I nearly stopped our whole trip long before it even began.

Overcome the fear and do it anyway

Lucky Bay

Since the moment we met a German couple who had hired a Motorhome and completed the road trip from Brisbane to Cairns and they talked about all the places they had been, we decided this was something we had to do. It was Australia Day 2015.

We spent the next 6 months researching and reading, making lists, looking at other people’s photos, following travel blogs and attending Camping Shows and it was all so exciting. Then one day I had a counter intuitive thought.

Is this really possible, is it really for us, are we making a massive horrible decision?

Weighing up the Pros and Cons

I got to a point where I wrote a long list of all the reasons why we shouldn’t leave on our trip. There were so many reasons, good reasons, and as I wrote them all down it began to make sense, there’s no way we could really leave and do this.

Once I would present them to Adele I knew what her response would be. I could hear her words already. I knew she would say “Yes I was thinking that too”!!

After all, Adele was the conservative one, I’ve always been the risk taker.

Great Ocean Road

Great Ocean Road

Should we Stay or Should we Go?

Then Adele would add more reasons to the list that she had been thinking and common sense would prevail and we would get on with life as we knew it. We would stay in our comfort zone, keep the protective roof over our heads, stay financially stable and do as we had always done and not overcome the fear.

After all, it’s what everyone else does!!

I can distinctly remember the moment I brought the conversation up and it went like this –

“I’ve been thinking and there’s really a lot of reasons we shouldn’t do it”, I said.

I remember exactly Adele’s response word for word – “What you don’t want to go?”

It wasn’t just the words but the tone of mass disappointment, like I was completely letting her down. The look on her face said everything, this was not her thinking.

Inside the Prop

Qantas Museum

I quickly hid my list in my pocket and responded, “ohh yes I want to go, just checking you didn’t have second thoughts……”

Good save Kev…. Phew!!

From that moment the thought of not going never entered my mind again.

My list of Cons

I still have that long list of completely good reasons we shouldn’t go. It read:

Friends
Family
Income
Hot
Cold
Things will go wrong
MACKS
Wanderers
Miss our stuff
Cameron
Midges/ Sandflies
Restricted electricity and water
Minimising

*MACKS was our Golden Retriever

*Wanderers referred to the Australian Wanderers Cricket team. I had just been to England and enjoyed a great tour and the next one was to Barbados which I was desperate to do. In the end I did miss out but our son Cameron got to go.

*Cameron is our youngest son who had a great job and wasn’t coming with us.

Overcome the fear and do it anyway

Mount Kosciuszko

Stay Focused and Overcome the Fear

But we stayed focused, overcome the fear from that point and in time everything fell into place.

We felt the fear, or at least I did, and we did it anyway.

It has been the BEST decision ever!!

It’s natural for us as humans to feel fear at the things we don’t know, don’t understand and haven’t done before.

This an adventure that will challenge you but the memories, the bonds and relationships you will make and strengthen you. The moments of amazement and the thrills of adventure will be with you for your life.

You won’t regret a single minute!!

Do it and don’t doubt yourself for a moment. I did and thank God one of us remained focused or Indefinite Leave may never have happened. I can’t imagine not having had the adventures and experiences the last 4 years have brought us.

Overcome the fear and do it anyway

Kings Canyon

Remember:

Life is short and our Country is huge!!

Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life!!

“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s OK. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” Anthony Bourdain

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” Neale Donald Walsch

“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in an office or mowing your lawn. Climb that damn mountain.” Jack Kerouac

How to save money on Accommodation

Save money on accommodation

Working out how to save money on accommodation is important because the cost for somewhere to stay each night can be one of your biggest expenses. It will of course depend on your setup, style of travel, where you go and your experience.

We found the longer we traveled, the more experienced we got and the less it cost us.

After 12 months on the road our average cost per night for accommodation was $33.12. It was costing us around 14% of our expenses.

At the 2 year mark accommodation was 12% of our expenses and now our average per night is $15.15. We have certainly reduced our accommodation costs as we have learnt more and gained experience on our travels.

Over the last 2 years our average cost for accommodation has been just $7.62 per night.

We have worked hard to find ways to reduce our costs and save money on accommodation with Free camping just one of those. On other occasions, opportunities just became available. Today we share everything we have learned on how to save money on where to stay overnight.

Save money on Accmmodation

Camping Free at Uluru in 2017

Here are our tips on How to Save Money on Accommodation

Wikicamps

Wikicamps is the traveler’s bible, it’s a fantastic app that the owners have done an amazing job to create, but it’s not the Law of Camping Accommodation. It doesn’t know everything as it’s run by us as users. It only knows what information we enter into it. Also it needs to be seen to reflect compliance, but not everything in life is black and white.

There are many more places you can stay that aren’t in Wikicamps!!

Use Wikicamps as an absolutely invaluable guide and everyone that sets off on your Big Lap needs to have it, but don’t limit your thinking to it having the only places you can find to stay.

Wikicamps is an app you can download to your Phone or Tablet for just $7.99.

Free Camps and RV Stopovers

This is the best and most common way to reduce your costs for overnight stays. There are so many fantastic locations to stay for free or very low cost all around Australia.

Check out our list of Free camps here – https://indefiniteleave.com.au/best-free-camps/

Free camping obviously will save you money on accommodation but there are other advantages too. It’s more relaxed and usually you have a bit more space too.

There are still a lot of places that you can’t free camp and that’s why having other options is just as important.

Our website has hundreds of great locations all around Australia you can search by location or camping type.

Save money on Accommodation

Brown Bay SA

Low Cost Campgrounds

Free Camps aren’t the only way to save funds on the road. There are lots of Low Cost locations to stay also.

These include Showgrounds, Pubs, Parks, Clubs, Station stays and Home Stays where you can stay for a small fee and will save you a lot of money on accommodation.

Our Best Low Cost Campgrounds around Australia

Vineyards

It’s probably debatable about saving money at Vineyards, for us it’d be a lot like staying at Pubs and we would absolutely over indulge haha

There are vineyards around the country though that do offer the opportunity to stay overnight. With some it may not be advertised but by asking the question you might find they say yes.

We spent some time on the road with my cousin. We went south from Mt Gambier and they headed north for a night. They ended up staying the night in the vineyard car park after the owner said it was OK and they even got given a couple of bottles of wine that had been opened. They were a little worse for wear the next day when we caught up again and I was very unhappy at missing out on the fun.

Get Discounts

Caravan Parks are still an important part of traveling Australia. For families they can be great places for the kids to have a lot of fun and enjoy their experience on the road. For us it’s about the location and having power to run our air con and a pool to swim.

We have stayed at some awesome Caravan Parks that have had the most amazing water parks which were fun for everyone.

You don’t have to pay full price at Caravan Parks, there are lots of ways to enjoy discounted stays and actually save money on accommodation.

Read all about how to save money when staying in Caravan Parks.

Save money on Accommodation by free camping

McGaurans Beach Vic

Leave the children at home

Ok, just threw this one in to see if you are paying attention lol

Wait, is it an option…… no…. ok!!

Talk to the Locals

We pulled up in a car park by the river at North Haven in NSW and an older man came over and asked if we were staying there the night. The answer was No as we were just there to take a look at the river and maybe do some fishing.

We were being very cautious as we didn’t know where he was going with it. We had no intention to stay in that spot the night anyway but it did seem strange. Turned out he used to have a Motorhome and was a local and he gave us all the details of where we could stay. One spot that the Rangers don’t enforce any rules and another where the Rangers couldn’t do anything.

We ended up in a great spot by the river for a couple of nights for free and have been back again since too.

He was a lovely fellow, hope he’s OK as he was having some cancer issues at the time.

That is just one example of locals giving us Gold information. We met a young family at Dalmeny Campground and then bumped into him again in his hometown further south. He gave us a premium location to stay that we enjoyed all to ourselves for 3 nights, listening to the waves and enjoying some spectacular beaches and fishing.

These are just 2 occasions, there have been other circumstances too. The more people you meet and are friendly to, the more opportunities that arise.

Find places that Council don’t have jurisdiction

The Council don’t own everything in town. You’d be surprised where you can actually stay that Rangers don’t have jurisdiction over and no-one else will be bothered.

The big trick to this is don’t put anything outside, not even your step down to climb in your rig, no awning, nothing. Don’t even leave your TV aerial up for the night. The obvious one is also to contain your water and leave the area tidier than when you arrived. Don’t stay in the obvious prime positions such as at the beachfront, beside the river or where a lot of people will pass by.

Free Camping on the advice of one of the locals in town

Be Self Contained

We stayed at so many Free Camps around the country that require you to be self contained. While a technical definition of self contained can be different wherever you go it’s pretty obvious that it will mean have your own toilet and shower and be able to contain your black and grey water.

We can all argue about definitions, it’s meaning and having a clear National ruling on it but reality is, having a toilet, shower and capturing the after effects will open a lot more places to stay that will save you money on accommodation.

Understand the difference between Signs

No Camping sign isn’t necessarily the same as a No Overnight Stays sign.

Firstly, it’s important to acknowledge there is no absolute definition of Camping in Australia. Therefore, any Council can define camping differently.

Any sign installed by a Council relies on legal definition and legality. This is why you will usually see signs state No Overnight Stays or similar that clearly state that you can’t stay in your vehicle. A sign simply saying No Camping without any other information could easily be argued that Camping is staying in a Tent.

If the No Camping sign also has an image of a vehicle with a line through it, then that is different, it clarifies and it includes a Caravan or Campervan etc can not stay overnight.

Excerpt from an article in RV Books

Michael Eburn, Barrister and Associate Professor at the Australian National University’s College of Law wrote on the website www.rvbooks.com.au that, A notice, regulation or sign can be challenged on the grounds of uncertainty.  In Director of Public Prosecutions v Priestley [2013] NSWSC 407 the defendant was acquitted of the offence of sleeping in Martin Place contrary to a sign that prohibited ‘Staying Overnight’ on the basis that there was no sensible way to understand what ‘overnight’ meant. Justice Adams said ‘Notices or rules which impose “criminal consequences for breach must be… sufficiently certain to enable the relevant tribunal as well as those brought before it to determine whether the impugned conduct is prohibited”.

The article went on to say – So, the answer to the question of ‘what does ‘No Camping’ mean?’ depends on who put up the sign or notice. A sign or notice from a government authority should, ideally, refer you to the Act, regulation or by-law that they rely on to regulate camping. You need to go to that legislation, regulation or by-law to see what definition applies. Where there is no definition, and where an inspector attempts to impose a penalty, you would have the option to ask a court to determine what ‘camping’ means in the particular circumstances. That is unhelpful as it is both expensive and it means you cannot know, in advance, what is or is not permitted but it does mean that allegations of ‘prohibited camping’ can be challenged.  And if the alleged prohibition is too uncertain it may be void.

If the definition of “overnight” can be challenged and won then how would “Camping” be defined by a court?

Making the right decision

Of course, being right doesn’t necessarily make it the right decision. Get a fine and it’s still going to be cheaper to pay it than try to defend it.

For us, we will consider a lot of factors. Are we in a large city or a small town? Is where we are a busy position? Would we expect there to be an issue for some reason? For example parking in a boat and trailer bay at a boat ramp (don’t do it). How private is it and any other factors that give us the feeling it may cause us an issue?

If the only sign is just a No Camping sign with no other instructions we will weigh up all the factors before making any decision. No Camping though does not necessarily mean you can’t stay in your vehicle. It also doesn’t guarantee a Ranger doesn’t want to make quota or he’s having a bad day and won’t fine you.

For us, we have stayed in a lot of different places and great spots where we have never had an issue.

Meet people, be friendly and don’t be Negative Nancy

It would be impossible to travel the country and not make new friends. I couldn’t imagine how you could not make great new friends on the road. We have met some of the most amazing people traveling Oz and we now have some amazing mates all around the country.

We certainly never expected or intended it to happen but we have stayed in the driveways and front yards of so many of our new friends all around Australia. Every time it has been a privilege and an honour to be asked and offered such kindness. Therefore we have always tried to respect the opportunities and friendships of those that have extended us such generosity.

Be friendly, be kind and enjoy every moment on the road and similar opportunities for a few nights here and there will likely become available for you too.

Visit relatives and friends around the country

We really enjoyed catching up with family and friends who live around the country and often we were invited to stay with them. My Cousin lives in Karratha and we had 2 weeks with him in his apartment and it was great fun.

We stayed with friends for 3 weeks and then 6 weeks in Darwin on their acreage which really allowed us to explore Darwin and see the Top End more than we might have otherwise.

We stayed with my brother in Longford in Tasmania for some of our time there and Adele’s cousin in Sarina on their cane farm.

Meeting family and friends around Australia we hadn’t seen for a long time or very often was a big highlight of our time on the road. The opportunity to stay with them made it even better. Make the time to stop and visit your family and friends and they may offer for you to stay too.

House Sitting

Our great friends we met and spent a lot of time with around Australia did numerous house sits as they traveled.

At first they had some trouble being selected but once they had one they found it easier. We visited them at most of the house sits they did and they enjoyed spending time with the animals, looking after the yards and sometimes a pool. They enjoyed the opportunity to have some space again with a house after long periods in their Caravan.

Our friends were able to stay for weeks at no cost.

They used Aussie Housesitters to find their places to stay. You just sign up, membership is $84 for the first year with reduced fees for renewing members.

If you would like to look at it further just follow this link for Aussie Housesitters. Simply sign up and get access to hundreds of opportunities to house sit all around Australia.

Plan where you will be during peak periods

Having a plan around where you will be during peak periods such as school holidays, Easter and Christmas can help you avoid paying any premium prices for places to stay and therefore save money on accommodation.

At these times of the year most places are often booked out and full. So without a plan you could be forced to pay huge prices to stay somewhere you didn’t plan to.

Try to work your itinerary to spend these times away from the crowds and Tourist areas and staying at less Commercial places where it’s quieter and you can still find a good Free Camp or somewhere to stay at the right price for your budget.
