Homemade Tasty Sausage Rolls

Homemade Tasty Sausage Rolls

Do you love stopping in at the bakery for a Sausage Roll or Pie or do you make your own tasty Homemade Sausage Rolls and Pies?

There are soooo many bakeries around Australia and people are always recommending the best bakeries to visit, fortunately for our waste line we haven’t stopped in at them all!

We may have frequented a few though for the odd sausage roll, pie or sweet treat 😊

It is so easy though to make your own Homemade Tasty Sausage Rolls and Pies.

When I make home-made sausage rolls, I make them from savoury mince as I always have mince on hand while we are traveling or when we’re at home.

Minced Beef for Homemade Savoury Mince Sausage Rolls

Here’s how to make Homemade Tasty Sausage Rolls that are super yummy.

Homemade Tasty Sausage Rolls Ingredients:

Sausage Roll Filling:

500g Minced Beef

Onion finely chopped

Teaspoon Minced Garlic

Tablespoon Olive Oil

Teaspoon Worcester Sauce

Teaspoon Garlic Salt

2 tablespoons Taco Seasoning

2 tablespoons Tomato Sauce

Sausage Roll Pastry:

2 Sheets of Puff Pastry

Butter or margarine to grease the pie dish and brush the top of sausage roll pastry

Homemade Savoury Mince Sausage Rolls and Pie ready for baking

To make Savoury Mince is super easy.

Our Method:

Tasty Sausage Rolls Filling:

Brown 1 chopped onion and 1 teaspoon of minced garlic in a tablespoon of Olive Oil in a fry pan and then set aside.

Brown 500g Mince and drain, return the browned onion and garlic to the fry pan.

Add dry ingredients: sprinkle 1 teaspoon Garlic Salt and 2 tablespoon of Taco Seasoning to the mince, stir to blend.

Squirt in 2 tablespoons of Tomato Sauce and drizzle 1 teaspoon Worcester Sauce over the mince, and mix altogether.

Tasty Sausage Rolls:

All you do is thaw 2 sheets of Frozen Puff Pastry. Cut each puff pastry sheet in half and spoon a row of savoury mince lengthways in the middle on each pastry strip.

Roll the closest length of pastry over the savoury mince and roll again to form a long sausage roll. Press the back edge to seal and cut each long roll in half to make 2 rolls.

Repeat the process for each of the 4 strips making a total of 8 individual Sausage Rolls. Brush butter or margarine over the top of the pastry which will add to the puffiness as the pie cooks.

Place the sausage rolls on a greased oven-proof dish or non-stick baking tray in the oven at 180 degrees C for 20 – 25 minutes or until pastry is golden. Serves 4

Homemade Savoury Mince Sausage Rolls ready to eat

Added Extras:

  • Add some mushy peas to the top of the savoury mince filling before rolling up to form the sausage roll
  • Mix in some corn with the savoury mince
  • Add vegetables of your choice to the savoury mince mixture
  • Include some chilli flakes for a spicier sausage roll filling
Savoury Mince with peas, corn and capsicum

Cost to Make Homemade Tasty Sausage Rolls

I have calculated the cost to make up these super easy Sausage Rolls is approx. $10.00. This works out to be $2.50 per serve. Costing is based on 500grams of Lean Minced Beef costing $7.50. Should you choose to use a lesser quality minced beef, it will reduce the total cost to approx. $8.50.

Homemade Tasty Sausage Rolls with or without sauce?

Do you like sauce with your Sausage Roll? For Kev it is a must, but I enjoy them with or without sauce. What flavour sauce do you add to your Sausage Rolls?

  • Tomato
  • Barbecue
  • Worcester
  • Tobasco
  • Chilli

How to make Yummy Chocolate from 4 Ingredients

Here’s how to make yummy chocolate from 4 ingredients. It is healthier and so simple to make. And all you will need is 4 ingredients….

Who doesn’t love chocolate, we sure do.

In 2016, we visited Charley’s Chocolate Factory in Mission Beach Qld and it was fascinating to learn all the intricacies about how to make chocolate including the farming of Cocoa Beans.

Charley's Chocolate Factory
Cocoa Beans growing’ at Charley’s Chocolate Factory in North Queensland

Cocoa Beans are native to Central and South America however here in Australia there is currently only 20 hectares for farming. This area is in tropical North Queensland. The cocoa tree is very sensitive to wind and requires humid, wet, tropical conditions. The right soil conditions are also paramount.

The greatest challenge to farming cocoa in tropical North Queensland of course is cyclones which can completely devastate the trees.

Only a very small area of Australia therefore is conducive to growing Cocoa trees which makes Charley’s Chocolate Factory a very unique Australian business.

Learning the art of chocolate only made our passion for this indelible delight of the taste buds even more committed.

Mastering the art of making chocolate

We have come across a few simple recipes since our visit to the chocolate factory in Mission Beach and have trialled a few versions but weren’t totally happy with the results, until now.

The ingredients we use to make our chocolate are always on hand as you never know when you are going to need more chocolate, right? With a bit of time to make some and to ensure our taste buds agreed we set about perfecting it.

With the use of just these 4 ingredients we have been able to make up this simple mouth-watering home-made dark chocolate that perfectly hits the spot.

The 4 Ingredients needed to make yummy Chocolate:

1/2 cup of Coconut Oil

1/2 cup Cocoa Powder (I used Cocao Powder which is Gluten Free)

3 tablespoons Honey (I alternate between Honey and Agave Syrup)

1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

If you are like me and regularly stock these 4 ingredients in your pantry, you can easily whip up a supply of chocolate anytime, anywhere especially while traveling!

How to Make Yummy Chocolate Step by Step:

To make yummy Chocolate from 4 ingredients is super easy.

Making Yummy Chocolate from 4 ingredients
Silicon Mould used to make Yummy Chocolate

Our Method:

All you do is place coconut oil in a saucepan and gently melt it. Add cocoa powder, honey and vanilla extract and stir until all ingredients are blended.

Simply just pour the mixture into a chocolate mould or into a silicon small sized ice cube tray which is what I used. Pop the chocolate filled ice cube tray in the freezer and it will be ready in approximately 15 minutes.  As coconut oil melts in warm temperature, it is best to store chocolate in the freezer. Just take it out of the freezer a minute or two before serving to allow it to soften a little.

On occasions, I have blended all the ingredients in a bowl but had to work quickly as it starts to thicken fast. I spooned the mixture into the mould whereas by sticking with the normal method, it can easily be poured into the mould.

Chocolate chards
Chocolate chards

You can also make thin chards or bark by spreading a layer of chocolate on a piece of alfoil or alfoil lined tray and popping it in the freezer to set. Then break into chards to eat or use as decoration on a cake or dessert.

I doubled the basic recipe which made 15 x 1inch cubed size chocolates.

Calorie Count

This basic Dark Chocolate recipe is –

Gluten Free

The amount of Calories per serving is approx. 149.

It contains:

Fat: less than 15g

Carbohydrates: less than 10g

Sodium:  1mg

Protein: 1.1g

Cholestorol: Zero

Note – The number of calories per serve will be dependent on the size of the chocolate square. The calories will also vary if you are creating any new flavours with nuts or other ingredients.

Bite Size pieces of yummy chocolate

Cost to Make Yummy Chocolate from 4 Ingredients

I have calculated the cost to make up this easy, healthy, delicious dark Chocolate is approx. $2.40. This costing is based on using the Only Organic Virgin Coconut Oil from Woolworths. There are a lot of expensive brands of Coconut Oil.

It doesn’t get much easier than that to make your own chocolate. Now you know how to make yummy chocolate from 4 ingredients, you’ll be able to whip up your own in a flash at home or while you’re on the road. You can also get creative and make all sorts of different flavoured chocolate!

Added Extras:

Cherry Coconut Chocolate

Try adding desiccated coconut and pieces of cherry and create your own cherry ripe! Simply add the shredded coconut and cherry pieces to the basic chocolate mix or place them in the mould and pour the chocolate mix over the top. This will add to the quantity of the chocolate mix making more serves.

Crushed Nuts

Another idea is to add in crushed macadamia nuts, slivered almonds or walnuts. For added variety, make a multi-nut batch.  Divide the nuts directly and evenly into the bottom of the mould or ice cube tray and pour the chocolate mix on top. By adding nuts, this will also make your chocolate mix go further!

White Chocolate Drops

Pop a White Chocolate Drop into the bottom of each section of the chocolate mould for a dark and white chocolate duo.

Alternate Flavour Suggestions:

Get creative and make up your own new flavours of home-made chocolate!

Orange Twist

For an orange twist, add some orange rind or orange essence to the chocolate mix.

Peppermint Twist

Plus, you can add peppermint essence for your own after dinner mint. The different flavour possibilities are endless!

This recipe is perfect for making at home to enjoy on a daily basis with a lot less guilt.

How to Make Blueberry Banana Smoothies at home

How to Make Blueberry Banana Smoothies at home

It is so easy and inexpensive to make your own Blueberry Banana Smoothies at home or while you are traveling.

As we are not tea and coffee drinkers, when we go out to a Café we enjoy a Fruit Smoothie! Kev usually chooses a berry flavour and Adele likes a banana smoothie.

We have simply combined each of our favourite smoothie flavours and created our new favourite – Blueberry Banana Smoothie.

How to make Blueberry Banana Smoothies at home
Blueberry Banana Smoothies

Here’s How to Make Blueberry Banana Smoothies at home for a fraction of the price

For a great Fruit Smoothie, it needs to be made with fresh or frozen fruit not the flavoured syrups that Cafés use to make Milk Shakes and Thick Shakes.

Over the last few months, I have had the time to perfect the smoothies that I make for us at home for brekkie.

They have Kev’s seal of approval as the Migaloo Café in Hervey Bay had set the benchmark for us in fruit smoothies, there’s are the best we’ve found while traveling around Oz!

To preserve our fresh fruit, I cut it up into bite size pieces, place it flat in ziplock bags and pop it in the freezer.

Plus, I freeze our yoghurt in silicon ice cube containers and once frozen transfer the cubes into ziplock bags then store the yoghurt cubes in the freezer as well.

I also have a stock of frozen blueberries, mixed berries and mango in the freezer.

How to Make Blueberry Banana Smoothies at home

I have found the secret to a great smoothie is for the smoothie to be ‘icy’ cold.

By having the fruit in the freezer, I not only have a supply readily available to make smoothies but when you blend the frozen fruit and yoghurt with the cold milk and honey it blends into an icy consistency.

The other great part of making smoothies at home is you can enjoy them for a fraction of the price you’ll pay in a Cafe.

The five ingredients to make Blueberry Banana Smoothies at home:

2 cups of cold Milk

1 frozen Banana

1 frozen large ice cube of Blueberry Yoghurt

¼ cup frozen Blueberries

1 tablespoon Honey

By having a stock of the frozen fruit and frozen yoghurt, I know I am able to easily whip up a yummy icy cold Blueberry Banana Smoothie anytime, anywhere!

To make this delicious smoothie, it is super easy.

Method:

All you do is place each of the ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth and icy. Then just pour the icy cold mixture into each glass.

This quantity makes 2 good sized smoothies. When traveling in the motorhome, I just use a stick blender and it does the job just as well.

Making Smoothies in the Blender at home

Cost to Make Blueberry Banana Smoothies at home

I have calculated the cost to make two deliciously icy cold Blueberry Banana Smoothies is approximately $2.40, so that’s just $1.20 per smoothie!

That is a great saving especially when traveling as you can pay 4-5 times more in a Cafe for a real fruit smoothie.

Added Extras:

Ice cream

Try adding a scoop or two of ice cream for a creamier and even icier Blueberry Banana Smoothie.

Alternate Flavoured Smoothie Suggestions:

Get creative and make up your own favourite fruit smoothie flavours!

Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Strawberry Banana

Try a Strawberry Banana Smoothie – just substitute the frozen blueberries for frozen strawberries and use strawberry frozen yoghurt.

Banana Mango

Another idea is to use frozen mango with banana and a mango flavoured yoghurt. Oh, I do love Mango!

Banana Mango Flavour
Ingredients for Banana Mango Smoothies

Choc Banana

Also you can leave out the frozen blueberries, substitute the blueberry yoghurt with a vanilla flavour and add a tablespoon of cocoa for a Choc Banana Smoothie! The different flavour ideas are endless!

It’s just so easy to whip up a delicious Blueberry Banana Smoothie or your favourite flavoured smoothie in a flash at home or while you are traveling.

Flavoursome Cambodian Chicken Curry

Flavoursome Cambodian Chicken Curry

It is awesome finding new recipes, especially when you are traveling. Our great friends Jason & Denise showed us how to make a Flavoursome Cambodian Chicken Curry.

You can cook it on the stovetop in your RV , or on a portable gas burner stove while camping. Even better is to make it in the camp oven on an open fire!

Flavoursome Cambodian Chicken Curry Ingredients

There’s nothing like cooking on a campfire to bring out all the flavours and create the best taste in a delicious curry.

Here’s how to make a Flavoursome Cambodian Chicken Curry, it is super yummy.

Flavoursome Cambodian Chicken Curry Ingredients:

Chicken Curry:

1 tablespoon Coconut Oil

1 x 400g Tin Coconut Cream

1kg Chicken Thighs cut into cubes

1 x cup of Green Beans

Fresh Coriander Leaves, to serve

Steamed Rice, to serve

Paste:

1 Lime, Rind (only) finely grated

3 Shallots, chopped coarsely

30grams Lemongrass Paste

5cm piece Fresh Ginger, peeled and chopped (For me personally, I don’t like Ginger so I actually leave it out)

4 Garlic Cloves, chopped

4 large Kaffir Lime Leaves, finely chopped

1 Fresh Red Chilli, chopped (sometimes we add Chilli Flakes, not always)

15g Palm Sugar, chopped (I have substituted Palm Sugar with 4 teaspoons White Sugar)

10g Roasted Belacan Shrimp Paste (I have opted to leave out as I don’t have it regularly stocked in my pantry however it will naturally add to the flavour)

3 teaspoons Fish Sauce

2 teaspoons Ground Turmeric

1-2 teaspoons Water

Blending paste ingredients

Our Flavoursome Cambodian Chicken Curry is easy to make.

Our Method:

Paste:

Place all the paste ingredients in a blender or food processor with water and blend or process until all ingredients are finely chopped and combined well, forming a paste. I only have a stick blender in the motorhome which works just as well.

Chicken Curry:

Heat the oil in a wok or large deep fry pan over a medium-low heat. Add in the paste. Stir and cook for 4-5 minutes or until it becomes aromatic.

Add Coconut Cream and simmer for 2 – 3 minutes. Add cubed chicken to pan and reduce to a low heat. It is important to maintain a lower heat to prevent the curry sauce from separating.

Add Beans and cook covered for 3-4 minutes or until beans are cooked to your liking and the chicken is cooked.

Cook on a gas stove in your RV or at home

Serve your Cambodian Chicken Curry with rice and fresh coriander leaves.
