Taranna Cottages, Taranna Tasmania

We chose to stay at the Taranna Cottages just 10kms from Port Arthur as it was the closest we could stay with our dog MACKS.
Taranna Cottages is a great base to explore this historic region.
Besides the 3 cottages, Taranna Cottages also offer camping area for self-contained motorhomes and caravans. It is suitable for all sized vehicles.
There is the top area where you can stay or the full paddock which is a huge open space.

5 Essentials – Ryobi Tools for Traveling
- A chainsaw certainly is an essential tool while traveling especially when camping and 4WDing. Perfect for cutting up wood for the campfire and ideal for clearing tracks of fallen branches when 4WDing. I really like the Ryobi Chainsaw and will be looking to buy one very soon to match all of my other Ryobi tools.
- The Ryobi Cordless Hand Vacuum has been super handy for the motorhome while traveling and now it is also great to use in our 4WD.
- Even prior to traveling, I have always used a Ryobi Cordless Drill. They are an essential tool for use at home and while on the road.
- We have had heaps of use from our Ryobi 18v Area Light. It’s great for fishing, camping and outdoor entertaining and even when we want to save power at night while free camping. Just charge it up the next day when you have solar.
- There are so many uses for our Ryobi Blower while traveling. Blowing the leaves off the top of the slideout before bringing it in, accelerating the campfire, clearing away any dirt, grass or sand from around your campsite.

Tasman Arch, The Blow Hole & Devil’s Kitchen
There are 3 natural wonders along the Tasman Peninsula and all are just a 15 minute drive from Rosedale Homestead formerly Taranna Cottages.
Tasman Arch is the result of a large sea cave being battered by waves for thousands of years. It now resembles a huge natural rock bridge.
The Blow Hole is just under 2kms from Tasman Arch. Like most blow holes it is best to visit at high tide to see it performing. Unfortunately when we were there it wasn’t blowing.
Devil’s Kitchen is a 150 metre walk from the Tasman Arch Carpark where you will look down at the where the Tasman Sea has carved a deep trench into the enormously high cliff.

Camp Grounds
Whalebone Bay Campground, Denham WA

Just 26kms south of Denham in Western Australia is the Whalebone Bay Campground which is a fabulous place to stay for 24 hours.
The Whalebone Bay camping area is located looking directly out over the bay with spectacular views and stunning sunsets.

Access is via the main Highway road on to a dirt road which has some corrugations and is 2kms from the beach and camping area.
Only 4 permits are issued each day and therefore it is always quiet and you won’t have many neighbours if any at all.
There are no facilities at Whalebone Bay Campground. This means there are no bins, no water, no power and no toilets. Fires are also not permitted.

There is a water station as you enter Denham, the cost for drinking water is $1 for 20 litres.
There is a Dump Point at the Information Centre in town.
We had limited Telstra coverage however no Optus of Vodafone.
Table of Contents

Whalebone Bay Campground is pet friendly and we had our dog MACKS with us.
Read more: Travelling Australia with our dog MACKS

Whalebone Bay Campground Permit
You need to go to the Information Centre in town and book your camping permit there. The Rangers came each day and were strict on only 24 hour stays.
Back in 2016 when we visited they did allow us to stay a second night but that is not possible now.
Permits are for strictly 24hrs only and you can now only stay at one of the 4 Shark Bay campgrounds – Whalebone Bay, Fowler’s Camp, Eagle Bluff or Goulet Bluff.

We recommend walking to the top of the small hill beside the camping area to see fabulous views out over the bay and along the coastline.
From atop here we saw sting rays and sharks in the clear turquoise waters below.

Find more details here on our favourite Low Cost Campgrounds around Oz.
5 Essentials – Outside RV Accessories
- To plug your RV with standard 15amp in to standard residential 10amp power source you will need a converter. We love our waterproof Ampfibian and after over 4 years it’s still perfect.
- Most people carry a Generator for back up power. 4wd Supacentre has a good low cost and popular generator while the Yamaha 2000w is a robust yet quiet excellent performer.
- A 20m 15amp Power Lead will ensure you reach your power source in Caravan Parks and Campgrounds.
- You will want a good blue Drinking Water Hose. Your typical green garden hose is not suitable for drinking from.
- A 4 way tap handle will help you find water whenever you need it
How to find Whalebone Bay Campground
From Shark Bay Road take the turnoff to Whalebone Bay along the dirt road for 2kms until you reach the beach.
It was a bit corrugated however we drove slowly in our 2WD Motorhome and did it easily.
Find a space to camp at the Whalebone Bay Campground on the waters edge and enjoy the fabulous sunset.
How to book a site at Whalebone Bay and stay
To book and receive your permit to stay at Whalebone Bay Campground you need to contact the Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery and Information Centre in Denham.
You can personally visit or call the Information Centre on 08 9948 1590.
Things to See and Do in and around Denham
While in Denham and Whalebone Bay we enjoyed visiting a number of great places to see.
Monkey Mia
Monkey Mia is a short drive from Denham and is infamous for it’s dolphin feeding. It gets very busy and hundreds of people are usually there most days. Only approx 5 people are chosen to feed the dolphins.
https://www.sharkbay.org/place/monkey-mia/

Ocean Park Aquarium
We visited the Ocean Park Aquarium which was excellent. Take the tour and see the shark feeding along with a large range of fish and marine species.
It is located just 8kms south of Denham and 18kms north from Whalebone Bay.
Cost for the Ocean Park Aquarium is $27 per adult and $19 per child.
Shell Beach
Shell Beach is an extraordinary beach in Shell Bay approx 20kms further south east of Whalebone Bay Camping area.
The beach is made up only of Cockle Shells for 60kms and is up to 10m deep. It is one of only 2 beaches in the world made up only of shells.
The ocean water within the bay has a very high salt (salinity) content.
Shell Bay is free to visit and has easy access from the carpark.

Camp Grounds
Lucky Bay Campground, Cape Le Grand National Park

Lucky Bay Campground is located in one of Australia’s most spectacular locations overlooking the beautiful turquoise waters and incredible white silica sand in Cape Le Grand National Park near Esperance in Western Australia.
Cape Le Grande National Park is 65kms east of the nearby town of Esperance.
Such an amazing location and fantastic campground, you must stay whenever visiting the region.

Cape Le Grand is approx 630kms south east from Perth, just over an 8 hour drive.
The roads to Cape Le Grand are all fully sealed and accessible by any vehicle. We did it easily in our large 8m 2wd Motorhome.
Lucky Bay Campground certainly features high on the list of our Best Beaches in Australia!
Check out our: The Best Beaches in Australia 1-10
Go swimming, fishing, snorkelling, surfing or launch your tinnie, the ocean will entice you with it’s pristine beauty.
You can even drive your 4WD down on to the beach and along the sand.
There is no camping on the beach but the Campground is so close to the sand you will feel like you are.

Table of Contents
Lucky Bay Kangaroos
Enjoy the Kangaroos as they make themselves comfortable around your campsite and are very friendly when on the beach.
Sometimes they will come over to you and allow you to pat them and certainly grab some great photos with a stunning backdrop.
On the beach there is usually a coffee van, the Lucky Bean, that also sells ice creams, snacks and drinks.
It’s the perfect spot to sit and relax and take in the majestic views.

Lucky Bay Campground Facilities
Lucky Bay Campground has solar powered showers available although there is not always hot water.
There is no drinking water available at the campground, you will need to bring all your potable water with you for your stay.
Bins are now available although the website still states no bins are in place.
Campfires in Cape Le Grand National Park are also not allowed.
There is no internet coverage at the campground but Telstra is available near Frenchman Peak.

Are Pets Allowed at the Lucky Bay Campground?
No Pets are allowed at Lucky Bay Campground, this is National Park.
We left our dog MACKS at Country Lane Kennels on the way to here from Esperance which cost us $22 per day including food.
Costs for dogs to stay vary between $21 to $30 a night, contact Jo on 0488 929 442 to confirm the cost for your pet.
They were fantastic and we can recommend leaving your pet there.
Read more: Travelling Australia with our dog MACKS

How to book for Lucky Bay Campground
Bookings are now available through the WA Government website and are essential prior to arriving.
Remember you will also require a Western Australia Parks Pass to enter the Cape Le Grand National Park.
An annual National Parks Pass will cost $120, or $75 if you have a concession. You can also purchase a Holiday Pass for 5 days for $25, 14 days for $40 or for 4 weeks for $60.
Aim for site number 12 where we stayed at the Lucky Bay Campground, it has outstanding views.
5 Essentials – Camping Accessories
A good Tent or Swag is the first decision for going camping. We like the Coleman Tent from Tentworld or the Wanderer 7 Man Tent from BCF. For a Swag, we were so close to buying the Kings Double Swag from 4WD Supacentre .
We like our BCF Wanderers Camping Chair which gets a lot of use as we travel Australia.
No more lugging around a huge BBQ and gas bottle now that we have a brilliant Gasmate Dual Burner Butane Cooktop from Tentworld
A good Portable Fridge Freezer we have found to keep the beers cold and steaks frozen are the Kings 70 L Fridge Freezer in the budget range, the Waeco 75L Dual Zone Fridge Freezer or the ever popular and long lasting Engel 75L Fridge Freezer.
A good quality Hand Held UHF is ideal and I like this Uniden UH750 5 watt UHF for long range and quality. The 5 watt range will give you maximum distance, especially if you need help!

What is there to do in and around Lucky Bay Campground, Cape Le Grande National Park?

Climb Frenchman Peak
Frenchman Peak was named by a surveyor named Andrew Forrest in 1870. The shape of the peak was thought to resemble that of a hat worn by French Troops.
A cave near the top is believed to have been created by waves and ocean waters 40 million years ago when sea levels were much higher then today.
This is also where you will likely get the best phone coverage in Cape Le Grand National Park.

Relax at Hellfire Bay
Hellfire Bay and Little Hellfire Bay are incredibly spectacular beaches not far from Lucky Bay Campground.
You can swim when conditions are right and walk along this stunning beach or climb the rocks for even better views.
A visit to the region should always include seeing Hellfire Bay.

Discover Thistle Cove and Whistling Rock
Another glorious beach in Cape Le Grand National Park is Thistle Cove with rocks nearby that due to their shape provide natural sounds from the wind.
This is yet another stunning bay within the amazing Cape Le Grand National Park.

Swim at Cape Le Grand Beach
It was my opinion that this was the most breathtaking beach of them all.
It’s hard to judge which one is the best because they are all so magnificent but Cape Le Grand beach is a long stretch of the most pristine waters you could ever hope to see.
With some small waves it was a great spot to swim and enjoy the ocean.
The rock outcrop gave the beach some protection and the views over the islands just a little off shore makes this one of Australia’s most incredible beaches.
The colours of the sand and water in this region are extraordinary.

Indefinite Leave

We are Adele & Kevin, an Aussie couple from Brisbane in Queensland Australia who have embraced our adventurous spirit and ventured out to explore the world around us. We had spent so much time overseas we decided it was time to see our own truly amazing country and we needed to take some time to see everything it has to offer.
Our Aim is to inspire others to travel and help design the greatest adventure they can experience.

Photography and Socials
Our camera equipment we use for all our photos and videos are:
Samsung Note 10 Plus Phone – http://ebay.us/9vMXEH – Most of our photos are simply from our phones. The Samsung phone cameras are pretty insane. Our phones have 512gb storage in ours but the 256gb in this one is heaps. We have sourced this one which is approx $500 less than we paid for ours.
Samsung s21 Phone – https://ebay.us/QAdwva – this looks an insane camera within a phone. We have friends and our son who own one and it seems quite extraordinary with their camera quality. If you’re after a new phone this is what I’d be looking at.
Canon 800d – https://ebay.us/Q0UV1z – the latest DSLR Canon 24mp camera, buy here to save.
Nikon Coolpix p1000 – https://ebay.to/37cORUV – We have the Nikon P900 and this is the new model. The zoom lens is unbelievable and so awesome when travelling and you want to capture photos from a distance.
Lenses
Canon 50mm lens – https://ebay.to/3nx5pyG This is the lens I use the least, ideal for still, close up shots.
Canon 24-105mm lens – https://ebay.us/br9MeO This is my all round, everyday use, zoom lens. Amazing quality, great price.
Canon 70-300mm lens – https://ebay.to/33xYeht – I use this one a lot for long range shots.
Sigma 10-20mm lens – http://ebay.us/zWvfuI – My wide angle lens for all my inside photos & video plus lots more, love this lens.
Our Go Pro 9 Hero Black – https://ebay.us/6CQOVC – is an awesome piece of equipment. I use this for all underwater, action video and some general use. Buy here brand new and great value.
Mavic Pro Platinum Drone – https://ebay.to/2ARPxTo This is an absolute ripper of a drone. The Fly More Combo will provide you with everything you will need. I use this for all my aerial footage and this price is well below other retail stores.
