Caravan Parks

Great value Lake Macquarie Caravan Park NSW

Ingenia Lake Macquarie

The Ingenia Holidays Big 4 Lake Macquarie Caravan Park in Mannering Park is in a fantastic location and is a really well priced Caravan Park.

Located at the northern end of the NSW Central Coast, we based ourselves here while we discovered this incredible region including Caves Beach, Umina and Terrigal.

When looking for Lake Macquarie Caravan Parks for accommodation you really should look at this one, it’s beautifully set over the water, lots of open space and fantastic value for money.

The Lake Macquarie Big 4 sits on the southern end of the Lake Macquarie providing tranquil water views right on the doorstep making it one of the best Central Coast Caravan Parks.

Boasting as the largest coastal salt water lagoon in Australia, Lake Macquarie is ideal for fishing and water sports.

Lake Macquarie Big 4

Big 4 Lake Macquarie Caravan Park Facilities

The Big 4 Lake Macquarie offers a quiet secluded place stay but at the same time is close to town.

This Lake Macquarie Caravan Park has good, secure, gated entry and comes with a big pool, great camp kitchen, children’s playground, communal BBQs plus a jumping pillow.

There are all the facilities you would normally expect with powered sites, water, bins and good amenities.

The Dump Point was harder to find, it is beside the toilet block and has an aluminum lid not the blue one you would often see. There were no clear identifying signs to it at the time.

The sites at the Lake Macquarie Big 4 were all a good size and had ample space. We were delighted with our grassy waterfront site.

Lake Macquarie Big 4 Grassy Waterfront Site

Are the Lake Macquarie Caravan Parks Pet Friendly?

The Big 4 Lake Macquarie Caravan Park is a Pet Friendly park however it is seasonal.

Although Lake Macquarie pet friendly accommodation is on offer, pets are at the Park Manager’s discretion therefore check with staff first at the time of booking and especially during peak periods.

We had good Telstra and Vodafone coverage at the Big 4 Lake Macquarie Caravan Park Mannering Park.

Cost to stay is: Weekend: $39 per night overlooking water, $35 back from water for powered site and water Mid week: $27 per night overlooking water, $25 back from water for powered site and water

Our stay was 2-5th December 2018

5 Essentials – Ryobi Tools for Traveling

  1. A chainsaw certainly is an essential tool while traveling especially when camping and 4WDing. Perfect for cutting up wood for the campfire and ideal for clearing tracks of fallen branches when 4WDing. I really like the Ryobi Chainsaw and will be looking to buy one very soon to match all of my other Ryobi tools.
  2. The Ryobi Cordless Hand Vacuum has been super handy for the motorhome while traveling and now it is also great to use in our 4WD.
  3. Even prior to traveling, I have always used a Ryobi Cordless Drill. They are an essential tool for use at home and while on the road.
  4. We have had heaps of use from our Ryobi 18v Area Light. It’s great for fishing, camping and outdoor entertaining and even when we want to save power at night while free camping. Just charge it up the next day when you have solar.
  5. There are so many uses for our Ryobi Blower while traveling. Blowing the leaves off the top of the slideout before bringing it in, accelerating the campfire, clearing away any dirt, grass or sand from around your campsite.
Caves Beach

Things to see and do in and around the Big 4 Lake Macquarie Caravan Park

Caves Beach

The sea caves at the aptly named Caves Beach on the Swansea Peninsula are absolutely amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the many caves and rock pools.

Be sure to time your visit to this magical spot at low tide as this is the only time you can access the caves at the southern end of the beach.

Caves Beach is just 25kms from the Big 4 Lake Macquarie Caravan Park and is definitely a ‘must see’!

Catherine Hill Bay Beach

Catherine Hill Bay Beach

Catherine Hill Bay is a former coal mining town and now a State Heritage Listed historic mining village.

19th Century miner’s cottages still stand in the sleepy township of Catherine Hill Bay and mark the oldest continuous settlement in city of Lake Macquarie.

The beautiful Catherine Hill Bay beach is a popular spot for swimming, surfing and fishing and at the end of the beach stands the iconic former coal loading jetty now used for walking and fishing.

Catherine Hill Bay
Umina

Umina

Umina, another coastal village on the Central Coast has a long sandy beach is ideal for swimming and surfing. This patrolled beach is very popular for families.

We did a beach hop down the Central Coast starting at Umina and what the locals call the Peninsula and working our way back up.

It is just over 63kms from the Big 4 Lake Macquarie Caravan Park.

Terrigal

Terrigal

Terrigal was another beach we visited on our beach hop along the Central Coast. We made it our lunch stop and enjoyed the ocean views while we ate.

Lined with Norfolk Pines, the beach and headland is beautiful and definitely worth exploring.

The views from The Skillion Lookout are stunning and during migration season it is a great vantage point to spot whales.

Terrigal is very popular for recreational fishing off the beach or you can try your luck hooking a marlin on a game fishing charter.

Caravan Parks

Port Lincoln Caravan Park, South Australia

Port Lincoln Tourist Park

We had to look for a good Port Lincoln Caravan Park when MACKS our Golden Retriever got sick in Ceduna and needed urgent treatment.

We found the Port Lincoln Tourist Park the perfect place to stay.

Port Lincoln is located on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia and is considered Australia’s Seafood capital.

Our site had the most amazing ocean views over Boston Bay and is just a short stroll to a small jetty where we caught plenty of squid.

Fresh Calamari was an enjoyable part of our diet here at the Port Lincoln Caravan Park.

Port Lincoln Tourist Park Campsite

Port Lincoln Caravan Park Facilities

The Caravan Park Free Wifi is good too, which isn’t often the case with Caravan Parks.

There are several amenities blocks which are very good, although not modern, with hot showers and excellent strong water pressure.

Two excellent camp kitchens are also on site with under cover BBQ’s, fridge and TV.

The staff at the Port Lincoln Caravan Park were really friendly and great to us, remaining patient as we dealt with our sick dog.

There is also a kids playground for the boys and girls to enjoy.

A Dump point is also available.

Port Lincoln Tourist Park

The Port Lincoln Caravan Park is set on a hillside and therefore some sites, including much of the unpowered section, is located on sloping grounds and may not be level.

We would recommend asking to go for a walk and choose the site that best suits you before being allocated a spot or setting up.

Stunning sunrises are the best part of the day as it rises over the ocean providing the most spectacular views.

MACKS at Port Lincoln Caravan Park
MACKS recuperating at Port Lincoln Tourist Park after her sever case of Geratric Vestibular Disease

Are pets allowed at this Port Lincoln Caravan Park?

The Port Lincoln Tourist Park is pet friendly and we stayed here whilst our dog MACKS was recovering from Geriatric Vestibular Disease.

We can also very highly recommend the Lincoln Veterinary Centre, they were superb in diagnosing and looking after MACKS.

Keep an eye out around the grounds for the Bunny Rabbits that come out to feed during the afternoon.

Powered sites range from $35 to $40 per night.
Unpowered sites are $30 a night with fantastic bay views

Proceed through 2 roundabouts and continue straight on Tasman Terrace before turning left onto Hindmarsh Street.

In 150 metres turn right, then in 50 metres turn left and in 20 metres the Port Lincoln Caravan Park will be on your left.

5 Essentials – Outside RV Accessories

  1. To plug your RV with standard 15amp in to standard residential 10amp power source you will need a converter. We love our waterproof Ampfibian and after over 4 years it’s still perfect.
  2. Most people carry a Generator for back up power. 4wd Supacentre has a good low cost and popular generator while the Yamaha 2000w is a robust yet quiet excellent performer.
  3. A 20m 15amp Power Lead will ensure you reach your power source in Caravan Parks and Campgrounds.
  4. You will want a good blue Drinking Water Hose. Your typical green garden hose is not suitable for drinking from.
  5. A 4 way tap handle will help you find water whenever you need it
Makaybe Diva Statue

Things to do in and around Portland

Makaybe Diva Statue

Makaybe Diva is the first racehorse to achieve 3 wins in the Melbourne Cup and these three wins were in consecutive years -2003, 2004 and 2005.

Add to this fabulous record, Makaybe Diva is also the only mare to ever win more than one Melbourne Cup.

Local Port Lincoln artist Ken Martin who sculpted the bronze statue took 9 months to complete the monument which was officially unveiled in 2006.

Check out the statue of this awesome racehorse which stands proudly at the Port Lincoln waterfront.

Flinders Archway Port Lincoln

Flinders Archway

The Flinders Archway commemorates the famous navigator Matthew Flinders. After setting sail on an expedition from England Flinders first arrived on the west coast of South Australia in 1802.

He continued to explore, map and name the South Australian coastline. In 1892, Flinders named Port Lincoln in honour of his native Province.

The stone archway was erected in May 1936. and a statue of Matthew Flinders RN and his cat Trim, donated to the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum by the Lang Foundation, was unveiled in February 2017.

Axel Senross Maritime Museum

Axel Stenross Maritime Museum

The Axel Stenross Maritime Museum right on the waterfront is full of restored historic vessels, marine artefacts and assorted relics. Axel, a Finnish Ships Carpenter sailed to Port Lincoln in 1927 to load grain and decided to stay.

Knowledgeable volunteers and unique interpretive displays throughout the museum tell Axel’s the amazing story.

You can also discover the lost art of wooden boat building, his original living quarters, workshops and the still operating slipway.

Open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 9.30am – 4pm and Saturdays and Public Holidays from 1pm – 4.30pm.

Magnificent views of Port Lincoln from Winter Hill Lookout

Winter Hill Lookout

From the Winters Hill Lookout, the views of Port Lincoln, the bay and Boston Island are simply amazing.

To reach the Winters Hill Lookout, it is simply a short 5 minute drive from the Port Lincoln CBD and was easily accessible in our motorhome.

Caravan Parks

Denham Caravan Park, WA

Denham Seaside tourist Village

This is a beautiful seaside town within the Coral Bay region of Western Australia with excellent Denham Caravan Park accommodation.

We stayed at Denham Seaside Caravan Park which fronts on to the stunning beach overlooking the most amazing turquoise waters.

From the beach you can see across to Dirk Hartog Island, Australia’s most western location.

Views from the Denham Seaside Caravan Park

Denham Caravan Park Facilities

This Denham Caravan Park has several amenities blocks and camp kitchens also with BBQ’s.

Another great feature is a games room with pool table, table tennis plus TV, guaranteed to keep children and adults amused for hours.

The Jumping Castle is very popular with children and even some adults who still believe they are kids.

There is no pool at the Denham Seaside Caravan Park however, swimming is available at the beach out the front.

It’s a great opportunity to get some sand between your toes, put out your towel and enjoy the spectacular beach and a swim.

The foreshore of the Denham Seaside Caravan Park

Are pets allowed at this Denham Caravan Park?

From the N.W. Coastal Highway turn in to Shark Bay Road from Hamelin Bay.

Denham is located approximately 825kms north from Perth and is about a 9 hour drive from the Capital City.

From Shark Bay to Denham simply follow Shark Bay Road.

5 Essentials – 4WD Accessories

  1. 4WD Recovery Tracks will get you out of most situations, especially in sand. We bought a pair of these generic branded tracks that have worked well whilst other brands include the Australian made TRED or the Australian Designed and made MAXTRAX 4wd Recovery Tracks.
  2. For our 4WD we went with this EDECOA 1500 3000w Pure Sine Wave Inverter which has been excellent value and works great.
  3. I’m a massive fan of my Victron IP65 15a Battery Charger. I use it often to give batteries a boost and it really is an essential part of my tool kit.
  4. When camping my Kings 200w Solar Blanket gets a lot of use and works really well. Only downside is it doesn’t work with Lithium batteries.
  5. Brass Tyre Deflators are a fast and easy way to lower your tyre pressure to your desired level. Perfect for when you are hitting the beach.

What is there to see and do in Denham?

Ocean Park is just 25kms away from the Denham Seaside Caravan Park

Ocean Park Aquarium

The Ocean Park Aquarium is a great way to see some of Australia’s most amazing marine life in their natural habitat.

Guided tours run between 9am and 3.30pm and take between 45mins to 1hr.

Aquarium tours include shark feeding and discovering marine life including moral eels, stonefish, clown fish, stingrays turtles and venomous snakes.

Shell Beach

Shell Beach

Shell Beach is entirely made up of tiny shells. The shell covered beach stretches 60kms and is 7-10 metres deep in shells!

This unique beach is just 45kms south-east of Denham and definitely worth a visit.

Whalebone Bay

Access to the Peron Heritage Precinct is via an unsealed road and suitable for 2WD however you will only be able to access beyond the Heritage Precinct to the north in a high clearance 4WD.

On the western side of the Peron Peninsula, there are four popular camping sites right on the coast just south of Denham:

Atherton Caravan Park on the Atherton Tablelands

Atherteon Big 4

Big 4 Atherton Caravan Park on the Atherton Tablelands Queensland was our Atherton Tablelands accommodation for our 1 night in town.

We only had a 1 night stay at the Big 4 Atherton Caravan Park. In typical Big 4 style the park provided very good modern amenities, big pool and excellent lush grounds.

Elevated 752 metres above sea level Atherton has considerable rainfall each year and humid subtropical climate, therefore the countryside is usually a rich green colour.

Atherton is just 81.7kms from Cairns and is just around an hour and a half drive away over the range.

Read more about all of the: Best Things to See and Do in Cairns.

Big 4 Atherton Caravan Park Property Amenities

The Big 4 Atherton Caravan Park is nestled among 6 acres of tropical gardens and is a haven for a variety of birds. They offer a range of accommodation including cabins, villas, a lodge as well as Powered and Unpowered sites for RVs.

Property Amenities include a Salt Water Pool and Balanese cabana and barbecue.

Atherton Caravan Park Playground Camp Kitchen

There’s also a kids adventure playground and a special area to wash down your mountain bike. The Atherton Mountain Bike Park is located directly behind this Atherton Caravan Park.

A direct link from the Caravan Park to Yabi and Baldy Mountains is handy for avid bushwalkers. Although we are yet to scale Yabi Mountain, the views of the Tablelands from the summit are apparently amazing.

We had good Telstra coverage and Vodafone and Optus were ok.

Are Pets allowed at the Big 4 Atherton Caravan Park?

The Big 4 Atherton Caravan Park is pet friendly. This is one of the reasons we chose the Big 4 Atherton Caravan Park as we were travelling with our Golden Retriever MACKS at the time.

Cost for the night was $45 for 3 adults with our Big 4 membership.

Big 4 Atherton Caravan Park Cost Update as at June 2021:
Powered Sites – From $49 for 2 people and From $44 for 2 people with Big 4 Perks Membership
Unpowered Sites – From $27 of 2 people

What attractions are close to the Big 4 Atherton Caravan Park?

Tinaroo Dam

Tinaroo Dam is only a 22 minute drive from the Big 4 Atherton Caravan Park. You can drive around the entire lake but the road does have a few potholes so you need to drive carefully.

Lake Tinaroo is open to swimming, boating and fishing however you do require a Stocked Impoundment Permit. A SIP can be purchased online from the Queensland Government Fisheries or a Queensland Post Office.

The lake does have a number of resident fresh water crocodiles which have been reported and known to have been in the lake for a number of years.

Millaa Milla Falls with Ferns

Millaa Millaa Falls

There are heaps of magnificent waterfalls in the Atherton region and Millaa Millaa is one not to be missed. Two of the other falls on the Waterfalls Circuit are Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls.

Millaa Millaa falls surrounded by beautiful ferns and lush rainforest are one of the most photographed falls in Australia! At times as the water cascades into the plunge pool below it looks like lace. The pristine plunge pool at the foot of the falls is a perfect place to cool off in.

Keep your eyes peeled as you may even spot a platypus in these waters.

Fitzroy Island

One of the great tours out of nearby Cairns is a day trip to Fitzroy Island. Cairns is just over 80kms from the Big 4 Atherton Caravan Park and it takes just 45 minutes by ferry from the Cairns.

Enjoy a fabulous day of tropical island paradise on Fitzroy Island by swimming, snorkeling, relaxing on Nudey Beach or enjoying a cocktail at the bar. It is an awesome day out!

Samsung Note 10 Plus Phone – http://ebay.us/9vMXEH – Most of our photos are simply from our phones. The Samsung phone cameras are pretty insane. Our phones have 512gb storage in ours but the 256gb in this one is heaps. We have sourced this one which is approx $500 less than we paid for ours.

Canon 800d – https://ebay.to/2XQYnsk – the latest DSLR Canon 24mp camera, buy here to save.

Lenses

Canon 50mm lens – https://ebay.to/3nx5pyG  This is the lens I use the least, ideal for still, close up shots.
Canon 24-105mm lenshttps://ebay.us/br9MeO This is my all round, everyday use, zoom lens. Amazing quality, great price.
Canon 70-300mm lens – https://ebay.to/33xYeht – I use this one a lot for long range shots.
Sigma 10-20mm lenshttp://ebay.us/zWvfuI  – My wide angle lens for all my inside photos & video plus lots more, love this lens.

Our Go Pro 9 Hero Black – https://ebay.us/6CQOVC  –  is an awesome piece of equipment. I use this for all underwater, action video and some general use. Buy here brand new and great value.

Mavic Pro Platinum Drone – https://ebay.to/2ARPxTo  This is an absolute ripper of a drone. The Fly More Combo will provide you with everything you will need. I use this for all my aerial footage and this price is well below other retail stores.
