Caravan Parks
Rainbow Beach Holiday Village, Rainbow Beach
Rainbow Beach is on the very northern tip of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and is a two and a half hour drive north from Brisbane.
It offers absolutely pristine beaches with towering coloured sand cliffs overlooking the ocean.
There are amazing sand blows including Carlo Sand Blow which you can climb for the most incredible views from the top.
Rainbow Beach is a small beachside town with a population of just 1249 people.
During summer holiday season and Easter it swells quickly to over 20,000 holiday makers who come to enjoy this amazing region.
Rainbow Beach is also well known as the gateway to the incredible world renowned Fraser Island.
Rainbow Beach Camping
For accommodation at Rainbow Beach we chose to stay at the Rainbow Beach Holiday Village which is the closest Caravan Park and camping area to the beach.
The Rainbow Beach Holiday Village is a Top Tourist park and offers 10% discount for Top Tourist members.
Rainbow Beach Holiday Village Facilities
The park has a beautiful pool, perfect if the beach is crowded or too windy.
The Caravan Park Campground also has BBQ areas, good amenities including toilets and showers and of course powered sites, water and bins.
A dump point is also on site.
Are Pets Allowed?
The park is pet friendly and therefore dogs are allowed. We had MACKS with us during our first stay at Rainbow Beach Holiday Village.
You’ll see why Rainbow Beach is rated as one of our Best Beaches in Australia!
Can you drive on the Beach?
To drive on the beaches at Rainbow Beach you will need a Vehicle Permit which are available from the Queensland Parks and Forest. The cost is:
- $13.40 for 1 day if booked online or $20.25 if not booked online
- For 1 week or less the cost is $34.10
- For 1 month the Vehicle Permit cost is $53.65
- More than 1 month up to 1 year the cost is $270
Driving the beaches around Rainbow Beach can be incredibly hazardous and should always be taken with great care.
Never try to bypass the rocks at Rainbow Beach on an incoming tide when the tide isn’t low.
There are numerous photo boards and Facebook pages dedicated to the many who have tried and failed to drive the beaches at the wrong times and destroyed their vehicles.
Please take care driving the beaches around Rainbow Beach and drive as close to Low Tide as possible.
The Rainbow Beach Holiday Village was our very first stop on our first day travelling Australia back in Feb 2016.

5 Essentials – 4WD Accessories
- 4WD Recovery Tracks will get you out of most situations, especially in sand. We bought a pair of these generic branded tracks that have worked well whilst other brands include the Australian made TRED or the Australian Designed and made MAXTRAX 4wd Recovery Tracks.
- For our 4WD we went with this EDECOA 1500 3000w Pure Sine Wave Inverter which has been excellent value and works great.
- I’m a massive fan of my Victron IP65 15a Battery Charger. I use it often to give batteries a boost and it really is an essential part of my tool kit.
- When camping my Kings 200w Solar Blanket gets a lot of use and works really well. Only downside is it doesn’t work with Lithium batteries.
- Brass Tyre Deflators are a fast and easy way to lower your tyre pressure to your desired level. Perfect for when you are hitting the beach.

Tin Can Bay Dolphins

While visiting the region take the chance to Feed the Dolphins at Tin Can Bay.
We believe this is the best spot to experience wild dolphins in the country.

We have spent a lot of time on Fraser Island over many years and we have written 2 lengthy detailed articles to help everyone get the best out of their time on the island.

Go 4WDing through the Great Sandy National Park
Next to Rainbow Beach is the amazing Great Sandy National Park with fantastic 4WD tracks taking you to so many wonderful places to explore.
Jump in your 4WD and discover everything there is to see in this truly amazing region.
Double Island Point and Lighthouse
One of the locations you can find from the Great Sandy National Park is to come out at the beach at Double Island Point and Teewah Beach.
Here you can discover the Double Island Point Lighthouse and make your way to a beautiful pristine bay where you can swim and fish and enjoy the most stunning beach location with the coloured sand cliffs as a backdrop.
You may even see the last remains of the Cherry Venture shipwreck along Teewah Beach which are sometimes still visible depending on beach erosion.
Inskip Point
North of Rainbow Beach is a number of great campground spots nearby to the barge landing point to Fraser Island which is Inskip Point.
This is another magic spot to swim and fish while overlooking the Worlds Largest Sand Island.
Where to eat and drink in Rainbow Beach:
Surf Life Saving Club
The Rainbow Beach Surf Life Saving Club is a great spot to stop for a drink and a meal.
Overlooking the magnificent ocean waters you can enjoy a great cold drink and have a fantastic lunch or dinner.
We stopped in for a meal and enjoyed fantastic views overlooking the beach.
Rainbow Beach Hotel
The Rainbow Beach Hotel is a great spot to stop and enjoy drinks and a meal.
They do great Pizzas, Pasta and Steaks and there’s plenty of excellent beers on tap and a great range of drinks at the bar.
Another great feature of the hotel is that it’s pet friendly. You can ask at the bar for water for your dog and outside is an area purposely designed for your dog to rest in the shade.
The Pub is directly outside the Rainbow Beach Holiday Village making it a very easy stroll back if you’ve had a couple of beverages.
Rainbow Beach Bakery
Whenever we head to Fraser Island the Rainbow Beach Bakery is our stopover point for a bite to eat before heading to Inskip Point to catch the Ferry over to the island.
We have been here so many times and each time it’s been excellent. I usually go for the more healthier options given I’ve been driving a few hours already and have a few more still to go.
So I normally grab a chicken and salad roll but we have certainly had the pies and sausage rolls and they are great.
I can also vouch for the Caramel Tart and Adele has always enjoyed the cream donuts.
The Rainbow Beach Bakery is in the main street among the strip of shops between the Butcher and Pharmacy.
Crème de la Crème
There’s nothing more Aussie then ice creams at the beach and Rainbow Beach is no different.
For Ice Creams and Gelato here you can’t go past Crème de la Crème.
They have a delicious range and we sure tried quite a few during each stay we’ve had a Rainbow.

Are the Kalbarri Caravan Parks Pet Friendly?
Kalbarri Anchorage Caravan Park, Murchison River Caravan Park and Kalbarri Tudor Holiday Park all allow pets on a seasonal basis.
Pets are allowed at Kalbarri Red Bluff Tourist Park. Dogs are also welcome at both Murchison House Station and Big River Ranch Kalbarri.
As we arrived in Kalbarri during September School holidays, our choice of a Kalbarri Caravan Parks was limited as we were travelling with our Golden Retriever MACKS.
At the time there were only 3 caravan parks as Kalbarri Red Bluff Tourist Park did not exist.
This meant we were unable to book into any of the Kalbarri Caravan Parks as they don’t allow pets during school holidays.

5 Essentials – Outside RV Accessories
- To plug your RV with standard 15amp in to standard residential 10amp power source you will need a converter. We love our waterproof Ampfibian and after over 4 years it’s still perfect.
- Most people carry a Generator for back up power. 4wd Supacentre has a good low cost and popular generator while the Yamaha 2000w is a robust yet quiet excellent performer.
- A 20m 15amp Power Lead will ensure you reach your power source in Caravan Parks and Campgrounds.
- You will want a good blue Drinking Water Hose. Your typical green garden hose is not suitable for drinking from.
- A 4 way tap handle will help you find water whenever you need it
Kalbarri Camping
There are also two camping options in and around Kalbarri, one a station stay and the other offering farm stay accommodation:
- Murchison House Station
- Big River Ranch Kalbarri
At the Murchison House Station, you can opt to camp alongside the Murchison River near the Homestead or choose bush camping anywhere on the property that you can access with your 4WD.
The Big River Ranch Kalbarri offers farm stay accommodation as well as a campground area overlooking the Murchison River.

Things to do in Kalbarri
Nature’s Window
One of the most iconic attractions in Western Australia is Nature’s Window in the Kalbarri National Park.
The mighty Murchison River is perfectly framed in this spectacular natural rock formation and is one of the most photographed attractions in WA.
Kalbarri Skywalk
A marvellous new attraction in the Kalbarri National Park is the Kalbarri Skywalk.
Two amazing cantilevered viewing platforms have been built projecting out from the rim of the Murchison Gorge.
Take a thrilling walk out on these viewing platforms for some absolutely incredible views of the surrounding gorge and the river 100 metres below.
Pelican Feeding
Each morning you can watch the resident pelicans waddle up onto the grassed area and wait for a feed of fish.
Originally Cliff Ross began feeding the pelicans in 1975 and local volunteers have continued on with the tradition of the daily pelican feeding.
Feeding starts at 8.45am on the foreshore directly opposite the Murchison Caravan Park.
A gold coin donation to help cover the cost of the fish is much appreciated.
Red Bluff Lookout
Enjoy the views of the dramatic and rugged coastal cliffs of Kalbarri and the Indian Ocean from Red Bluff Lookout.
Red Bluff Lookout is also the perfect vantage point to spot Humpback Whales on their annual migration.

Access from the Caravan Park to Mossman River is challenging with a steep embankment which is often wet, muddy and overgrown from the regular rain the region receives.
A dump point is accessible at the front of the Mossman Caravan Park from the car park.
It’s an easy walk to town which we did and enjoyed having dinner one night at The Exchange Hotel, the local Pub in Mossman.
We enjoyed our stay in Mossman and found it the ideal base to visit the region. It was also around $15 a night cheaper than staying at Port Douglas.
The Mossman Caravan Park cost us $36pn plus $10 for the extra adult on a powered site.

- Powered site for 2 adults is $43 per night. For seniors it is $41 per night. Extra adults or children (4 years or older) are $9 each per night.

Hook-a-Barra
Have fun catching the prized Barramundi at the local Hook-a-Barra.
Hook-a-Barra is a salt water fish farm which breeds Barramundi to be supplied to restaurants all over the country.
We had a great time fishing the ponds with thousands of Barra and learning the art of catching these highly sought after fighters.
Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery
We visited the Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery and were delighted at the Tropical Fruit wines that were available.
We tasted some fabulous wines, some Fortified wines and a Port. There’s even a Chocolate Fortified wine which was great.
The winery is in Mossman at 417 Shannonvale Road.
Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures
Just 25 minutes south from Port Douglas is the award winning Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures tourist attraction.
See Salt Water Crocodiles, Cassowaries, Koalas, Wombats and so many more incredible Australian animals.
Book your ticket to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures here.
Where to Eat out in Mossman:
The Exchange Hotel
We enjoyed a fabulous dinner at the Queensland Heritage listed Exchange Hotel in Mossman during our first stay.
First established in 1896 the Exchange Hotel in Mossman was damaged by several cyclones. In 1934 a cyclone once again casued significant damage and a new Exchange Hotel was built and opened in 1935.
We enjoyed an excellent Pub meal and our favourite drinks on tap and watched as the long sugar cane train passed by outside the window.
Beechwoods Cafe
The Beechwoods Cafe is a great spot for breakfast or lunch which excellent coffee and juices and a range of food available.
It is located at 13 Front Street in Mossman.

- A 4 way tap handle will help you find water whenever you need it
Things to do in Adelaide
Hahndorf
Be sure to go to Hahndorf when in Adelaide, it is a must visit!
Hahndorf is the quaint but awesome German style village just half an hour out of Adelaide.
Set in the Adelaide Hills, Hahndorf is Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement.
The strong german influence can still be seen in the restaurants, cafes, pubs, bakeries, small goods and stores selling cuckoo clocks and hand crafted leather.
A range of other stores also make Hahndorf a shopper’s and foodie’s delight!
The Big Rocking Horse
In the Adelaide Hills, just 40 minutes from Adelaide is the Big Rocking Horse and Toy Factory.
The Big Rocking Horse stands at over 18.3 metres tall, 17 metres in length and weighs 25 tonnes.
It is the world’s largest Rocking Horse and is recorded in the Guiness Book of Records.
You can climb this super-sized rocking horse for just $2 and you will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
While at the Big Rocking Horse, wander through Australia’s largest wooden toy factory or check out the Animal Farm.
