Tiaro Memorial Park, Tiaro Queensland

Tiaro Memorial Park

Tiaro is a small town in Qld, just 27kms south of Maryborough and 59kms south of Hervey Bay. We stayed at the Tiaro Memorial Park which offers a Free Camp with a 48 hour stay.

The Tiaro Free Camping area is not a very big area but we arrived late and were able to find a spot.

There is a toilet close by and apparently a 2 minute hot shower is also available. It is pet friendly and we had good coverage with both Telstra and Vodafone.

Tiaro Memorial Park Free Camp is a great stopover for a night if you are traveling through the area and onto Hervey Bay which also offers a Free 48 Hour Rest Stop.

Cost to stay is Free.

Our stay was 3rd January 2019

Dalmeny Campground, Dalmeny NSW

Dalmeny

The Dalmeny Campground is perfectly located overlooking spectacular Dalmeny Beach.

Dalmeny is just 5 mins from the beautiful town of Narooma on the south NSW coast. The campground is located on a hilltop of sloping grounds so most sites are not level but they do provide spectacular views.

It is pet friendly and there are toilets, showers, laundry and a dump point available.

There is an IGA and fuel station across the road. There’s also a great Fish and Chips shop.

Fire pits are available for hire along with firewood.

The beach is excellent for swimming, surfing and fishing and you’ll even spot the resident Emu’s that often wander the beach.

We had good Telstra coverage and I also had 1 bar of Vodafone network.

We recommend the Tour to Montague Island called Montague Island Tours with Wazza. It was a great day out, swimming with seals and enjoying the tour of the island.

Cost to stay is $33 per night for 2 adults for powered site. Children 5-16yo are $6 each per night.
* Updated 22/1/2020 Prices vary throughout the year depending on season. Off peak is $29, Shoulder season is $34 and Peak season is $52 a night.

Check the website for more details. https://dalmenycampground.com.au/rates/

Also look for Stay 7 pay 6 nights deal.

Our stay was 22nd February and 28th February to 6th March 2019.

Save Money staying at Caravan Parks

Save money staying at Caravan Parks

When you are traveling around the country doing your Big Lap it can be quite expensive but if you can find ways to save money staying at Caravan Parks it can be less tough on the wallet! Costs add up even more so if you have children. Although we don’t have little kids with us as we travel we know just how difficult, expensive and unfair it is for traveling families.

For our first 2 years our 23yo son traveled with us so we had an extra adult as part of our accommodation cost and that made Caravan Park stays quite expensive.

To control your budget it is important to find ways to create better value when traveling and Fuel and Accommodation are likely to be 2 of your bigger costs.

Our tips on How to Save Money staying at Caravan Parks

In this article we have outlined how we have learnt to save costs when booking into Caravan Parks.

This has helped us to look after our budget better and give us more to spend on tours and attractions we want to do.

We do enjoy Caravan Park stays. Sometimes they have a great location or we get to enjoy time in the pools and we like using their excellent facilities. Other times in areas like Airlie Beach, Gold Coast, Darwin and Broome for example there’s no other option.

The most important thing we have found to Save Money staying at Caravan Parks to simply ask. Check and see what offers and deals the Caravan Park provides. In peak season it’s more difficult to get discounts but it is possible and there’s a lot of weeks left in the rest of the year to save some money.

Read all about Our Best Caravan Parks around Australia.

Caravan Park Memberships

When we first left we ended up signing up for a number of Caravan Park memberships. We had Big 4, Top Tourist and Discovery memberships and used these to get 10% off our park fees at those selected Caravan Parks.

At the time they were approx. $40 each to join.

As we traveled in the north we found it was so hot we wanted air conditioning and a pool so we often stayed in one of these Caravan Parks.

Loyalty Cards

Reflections Holiday Parks provided us a Loyalty card. With each day of our stay our card was punched with a hole until we reached the last night and then the next night’s stay was free.

The card could be used right across their Group.

In NSW we found a lot of our preferred Caravan Parks were Reflections Holiday Parks and this helped provide good value.

RACQ and NRMA Discount

We soon learnt being a member of our State Roadside group RACQ or NRMA gave us access to discounts and save money when satying at some caravan parks. Usually approx 10% but sometimes it could be more.

Check with your Roadside assist from your state and see what discounts they provide too.

Ask at reception or over the phone at the Caravan Park is they accept it for a discount.

Check the Caravan Park Website

Each Caravan Park has its own website and whilst WikiCamps is fantastic, we call it the travellers Bible, the website for the Caravan Park is their method of marketing and any specific offers will be on there. WikiCamps is a user group, run by us as travelers, it’s not where Caravan Parks advertise their deals.

We always look at websites for any deals or offers.

Free Nights

Call and ask for any specials or deals. Lots of parks have Stay 4 and Pay 3 or Stay 7 and Pay 6 deals. These good specials can significantly change the cost of where you are staying when you have a free night or two spread out over your stay,

TAWK Membership

We have spent a lot of our time on the road with other families and they all enjoyed their TAWK (Travelling Australia With Kids) Membership. At participating Caravan Parks all around Oz you get 2 nights for free.

The cost of the membership is a once off $25.

The membership card also has other benefits including 10% off attractions and other goods and services.

For all the details go to https://tawk-shop.travellingaustraliawithkids.com/collections/frontpage/products/tawk-membership-card

National Seniors cards

Once we turned 50 we found out we were eligible for the National Seniors Card. This is a membership which costs $45 for one person or $75 for a couple to join and we use it at Caravan Parks and receive discounts on our stay. We simply ask do you take National Seniors card and some say No but we found most said Yes.

We imagine you could do the same with the Free Government allocated Seniors card.

Most times we receive 10% off the rate.

More about the National Seniors card for over 50’s here – https://indefiniteleave.com.au/national-seniors-card/

Adele getting soaked

WikiCamps Discount

When we traveled through NSW we found some Caravan Parks accepted WikiCamps discount. We simply asked if they gave a discount for WikiCamps and many said yes. We aren’t sure if that is offered in other regions or just NSW but it always pays to ask.

CMCA Membership Deals

We found Caravan Parks also give CMCA (Caravan and Motorhome Club of Australia) discounts. Membership to CMCA is $44 per year with a one off joining fee of $16.50.

The CMCA do great work for travelers including, but not limited to, being instrumental in the placement of dump points around the country. This may also be a way to receive cheaper rates during your Caravan Park stays.

Travel Auctions

A recent new method more and more people are using is Travel Auctions. This is a website where you can bid on accommodation offered by Caravan Parks all around Australia.

Simply register online at https://www.travelauctions.com.au/, find the location where you are looking for somewhere to stay and bid on any available Caravan Park stays on offer.

Another tip for how to Save Money staying at Caravan Parks is to be friendly and just ask

Our friend Denise says just be very friendly and ask. Now there must be something in it, we arrived at the same park where they had just been near Wilsons Prom and they received a great deal. I’m not sure how she bats her eyelashes or it might be their beautiful daughter who wins them over but we got nothing. Sometimes it might just be if they’re in a good mood that determines what specials you might get but no doubt being friendly, kind and polite is a good way to start before asking for any deals.

Camp Grounds

Congo Campground, Congo NSW

Congo Campground

Congo Campground is approx. 35kms south of Batemans Bay and just 330kms south of Sydney.

It is a bitumen road in from the north except some small sections of gravel road with minor corrugations. When exiting to the south it is a short drive on a gravel road through the National Park back to the Princess Highway.

The Campground has cold showers, toilet facilities and a basic camp kitchen. This is National Park and no pets and no fires are allowed. Weekends at Congo Campground can get very busy and there is no booking ahead, only turn up and hope a spot is available.

Camping is alongside the river although it is not connected to the ocean beach. The beach is fantastic and great for surfing and fishing. We saw dolphins go past and a guy catch a great feed of squid from a kayak just offshore.

We only stayed the one night but it’s a superb location and a fair price.

Cost to stay is $12 per adult. Children 5-15yo are $6 each per night.

Our stay was 21st February 2019.
