Corella Dam, Queensland

Corella Dam

Corella Dam is approx half way between Cloncurry and Mount Isa in North Queensland and offers great free camping.

This is a beautiful location to relax and enjoy the amazing scenery. We arrived for a 1-2 day stay and were there for 5 nights.

The sky at night would light up and in the dark the stars would shine. The Sunsets were truly magnificent.

Corella Dam Facilities

There are no facilities at Corella Dam.

Bins are available on the site however there are no toilets, showers or water.

Fires kept us warm and allowed us the opportunity to cook some amazing meals in the open over the coals.

Phone coverage at Corella Dam was very hit and miss with Telstra. We had no Vodafone coverage.

Clem Walton Park

Clem Walton Park is nearby and does have toilet facilities and I was told dump point capabilities.

Are dogs allowed at Corella Dam?

Corella Dam is pet friendly and therefore dogs are allowed.

Access in to the campground is via a short and easy to drive 2km dirt track off the highway. We did it easily in our 2WD Motorhome.

Boating is popular at Corella Dam
Fishing for Red Claw
Red Claw at Corella Dam

Corella Dam Crocodiles

The Dam does apparently have Fresh water crocodiles although we didn’t see any.

Don’t be frightened by the many cows that come by at night, some nights they do come through in large numbers.

Corella Dam Red Claw

We caught plenty of Red Claw from the shore but had to get over the back areas away from most of the campers. Lots of campers here have boats and go fishing each day.

5 Essentials – Ryobi Tools for Traveling

  1. A chainsaw certainly is an essential tool while traveling especially when camping and 4WDing. Perfect for cutting up wood for the campfire and ideal for clearing tracks of fallen branches when 4WDing. I really like the Ryobi Chainsaw and will be looking to buy one very soon to match all of my other Ryobi tools.
  2. The Ryobi Cordless Hand Vacuum has been super handy for the motorhome while traveling and now it is also great to use in our 4WD.
  3. Even prior to traveling, I have always used a Ryobi Cordless Drill. They are an essential tool for use at home and while on the road.
  4. We have had heaps of use from our Ryobi 18v Area Light. It’s great for fishing, camping and outdoor entertaining and even when we want to save power at night while free camping. Just charge it up the next day when you have solar.
  5. There are so many uses for our Ryobi Blower while traveling. Blowing the leaves off the top of the slideout before bringing it in, accelerating the campfire, clearing away any dirt, grass or sand from around your campsite.

We highly recommend Corella Dam as a fantastic Free camp and it is one of our favourite experiences in Australia.

Enjoy the video and a look around this awesome location, it’s one of the best free camps in Oz. Plus, check out our 22 Best Free Camps in Australia.

Cost to stay at Corella Dam is Free.

Our stay was July 22-25th 2017

How to get to Corella Dam:

Follow the Barkly Highway west of Cloncurry or east of Mt Isa until you see the sign to Corella Dam on the south side of the Highway.

There is a gate to open and then close to enter the gravel road to the camping areas.

Corella Dam is approximately 9kms east of Mary Kathleen.

What is there to do at Corella Dam?

Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine

Visit the old deserted Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine which is now a ghost town. Discover the locations of the school, shops and houses that used to exist in the township now evacuated since 1984.

Ask for a map of the original town at the Mount Isa Information Centre and it outlines where all the buildings once stood and the layout of the Mary Kathleen township.

Corella Fishing and Red Claw

Go fishing and catch Red Claw which is good fun and make for a great meal.

Boating and Kayaking

Plenty of people take their boats to Corella Dam and although there isn’t a boat ramp, you can take care to launch your boat fairly easily from the bank. Kayaking at Corella Dam is also very popular.

Caravan Park in Perth Western Australia

Midlands Tourist Park

The Midland Tourist Park is a good Caravan Park in Perth where we stayed during our month camping in Western Australia’s capital city.

This Caravan Park in Perth is located just a few kms from the fabulous Swan Valley, the premier local wine region which doesn’t disappoint.

Midland Tourist Park was primarily permanents with spaces allocated for travellers while we were there but has gone through a major transformation since our stay.

We stayed here for 4 weeks while we organised the Motorhome to be serviced, arranged a new awning and got to learn everything about the city of Perth.

We had easy access by public transport into the city and Highway access to Fremantle and Hillarys Beach.

Our site at Midlands Caravan Park in Perth

Facilities at the Midlands Caravan Park in Perth

The amenities are good and have recently had upgrades and the internet was excellent during our stay.

There is now an outdoor pool and spa in place and the swimming area is a great feature of the park.

Since our stay there is also a new fully equipped camp kitchen which includes BBQ’s.

There’s an air conditioned recreation room which includes a large TV, leather lounge, pool table and Free Wifi.

The entire Caravan Park in Perth here at Midlands now offers Free Wifi.

There are powered sites with water hook up and a dump point is available.

This Perth Caravan Park is now a Big 4 but it’s not your typical large Big 4 Caravan Park with lots of entertainment and features for kids.

Midlands is a fairly basic caravan park in Perth with good facilities at a reasonable price.

This Perth Caravan Park is pet friendly, we stayed with our Golden Retriever MACKS so you are welcome to bring your dog.

Perth averages nearly 9 hours of sunshine per day making Perth the sunniest capital city in Australia.

February is the warmest month of the year in Perth averaging 31.6 degrees C and has the second highest monthly maximum behind Darwin out of all of the Australian Capital cities.

During these months Perth is glowing with colour, has mostly sunny days and little rain.

Visit the fabulous wineries in Swan Valley

Within just 10 minutes from the Big 4 Midland Caravan Park in Perth is the fabulous Swan Valley.

We loved Swan Valley and during our 4 week stay in the nearby caravan park in Perth, we visited numerous wineries and enjoyed tasting chocolate, cheese and nuts on three separate occasions.

Rottnest Island

Head over to Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is a must visit and only 19kms off Perth.

Simply take the ferry from Freemantle which takes just 25 minutes, 45 minutes from Hillarys Boat Harbour or 90 minutes if travelling from the Barrack Street Jetty in Perth.

One of the highlights of Rottnest Island is that it is one of the few places you can get up close to a quokka, the small wallaby-like marsupial. Rottnest Island also has 63 beautiful beaches and the turquoise waters are truly stunning.

There are plenty of things to see and do on Rottnest, and one day was not quite enough time to really explore this fabulous island.

Caravan Park in Albany, Western Australia

Big 4 Emu Point

We really enjoyed the Caravan Park in Albany where we stayed, located at Emu Point right on the beach.

The Big 4 Emu Beach Holiday Park is perfectly located with the sound of the ocean right behind us.

This Caravan Park in Albany is a great place to base yourself to visit the many features in the area to see.

Our site at the Big 4 Emu Park Albany Caravan Park

The town of Albany is located approximately 420kms southeast of Perth, about a 5 hour drive, in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, Australia’s largest wine region.

Albany has a population of over 34,000 and enjoys a warm, albeit short summer. The weather during winter is typically cold and wet.

It’s a great place to enjoy the sights and learn about the incredible history of one of Australia’s most important towns.

Big 4 Emu Beach Albany Caravan Park Facilities

This Caravan Park in Albany also has a jumping pillow and putt putt plus children’s playground, perfect to keep the kids entertained.

Since our stay the kids playground has further improved considerably and now looks like lots of great fun.

The Big 4 Emu Park Caravan Park backs onto the beach

Our son Matt caught some bream and other fish at night off the beach out front.

There’s also a theatre room now available for use.

There is no pool in the complex, although the beach is a stones throw away.

A new toilet block was being completed during our stay and is now also available.

There are BBQ’s in the Camp Kitchen and in 2 other locations around the Caravan Park and bins are available.

During our stay we had the best Wi-fi with good speed and unlimited download.

5 Essentials – Outside RV Accessories

  1. To plug your RV with standard 15amp in to standard residential 10amp power source you will need a converter. We love our waterproof Ampfibian and after over 4 years it’s still perfect.
  2. Most people carry a Generator for back up power. 4wd Supacentre has a good low cost and popular generator while the Yamaha 2000w is a robust yet quiet excellent performer.
  3. A 20m 15amp Power Lead will ensure you reach your power source in Caravan Parks and Campgrounds.
  4. You will want a good blue Drinking Water Hose. Your typical green garden hose is not suitable for drinking from.
  5. A 4 way tap handle will help you find water whenever you need it

Caravan Parks

Denmark Caravan Parks, WA

Big 4 Denmark

We took a look around the Denmark Caravan Parks and found the Big 4 Ocean Beach which was located opposite the Harding River where it opens out onto the ocean.

Our first impressions upon arriving was it’s a big park with lots of space and it looked really well maintained.

The position was perfect for us so we booked ourselves in for our 2 night stay.

Denmark WA is a pretty town on the Rainbow Coast in the Great Southern region of Western Australia.

Our site at the best of the Denmark Caravan Parks

Denmark is on the south coast of Western Australia approximately 430kms south east of the states capital city, Perth.

Population is around 2500 however during holiday season it increases significantly as it’s a very popular beachside location.

The town was formed in 1895 on the back of a nearby gold rush and timber milling.

Today Denmark is reliant on Tourism, Cattle and Dairy farming, the Fishing industry and the creative Arts.

There’s lots of stunning beaches, walks and trails, 4WDing tracks, kayaking, snorkelling, swimming and wineries you can visit during your stay in Denmark WA.

Ocean Beach

Denmark Caravan Parks – Facilities

The Big 4 Denmark Ocean Beach Holiday Park is in outstanding condition and the amenities and facilities are fantastic. We considered it the best of the Denmark Caravan Parks.

There’s a big enclosed Camp Kitchen plus four BBQ’s and there were other BBQ’s about the park.

We didn’t stay long enough to use the facilities but they were all in great condition and looked clean and well maintained.

Kangaroos roam this Denmark Caravan Park and there are lots of birds about also.

The Free Wifi is slow, we suggest you talk to the staff and see if they can place you where access to the internet may be best. Possibly it has improved since our stay however.

A convenience store is on site which also includes Bait and Ice and a few other items you might need during your stay.

Gas bottle refills or swap is also available.

Activities at Big 4, the best of Denmarks Caravan Parks

Denmark Caravan Parks – Activities

Children and Adults are both entertained by all the awesome things to do at the Big 4 Denmark Ocean Holiday Park.

You can enjoy the Tennis Courts, play a round on the Putt Putt Golf course, have fun playing Volleyball, let the kids go crazy on the Jumping Pillow and there’s still lots more to do.

There’s now a new big children’s playground for the kids to enjoy safely during your stay too.

It’s an easy walk across the road to the beach where kite surfers are often enjoying themselves or you can go fishing, swimming or surfing.

The nearby Ocean Beach rates in our Best Beaches in Australia 21-30

Kangaroos roam the Denmark Caravan Parks

This is your typical Big 4 with all the fun and facilities you come to expect without the Big price.

There is no pool or waterpark, however you won’t miss it.

It’s too cold to swim in Denmark most of the year and on any hot summer days there’s the river and beach very close by.

Greens Pool

One of the fabulous attractions and just 15 minutes from the township of Denmark is the magical Greens Pool. This Western Australian beach is located just of the outskirts of William Bay National Park.

The large granite boulders surrounding Greens Pool shelters it from the Southern Ocean  making it a great place to swim in the turquoise waters and relax on the white sandy beach.

Elephant Rocks
The aptly named Elephant Rocks

Elephant Rocks

Elephant Rocks are aptly named as the huge granite boulders look like a herd of elephants trampling into the water from behind.

Just a short walk from the carpark takes you to a lookout over Elephant Rocks. Take the trail that descends into the beautiful cove between the rocks.

You can walk between Elephant Rocks and the adjacent Greens Pool.

Photography and Socials

Our camera equipment we use for all our photos and videos are:

Samsung Note 10 Plus Phone – http://ebay.us/9vMXEH – Most of our photos are simply from our phones. The Samsung phone cameras are pretty insane. Our phones have 512gb storage in ours but the 256gb in this one is heaps.

Samsung s21 Phonehttps://ebay.us/QAdwva – this looks an insane camera within a phone. We have friends and our son who own one and it seems quite extraordinary with their camera quality. If you’re after a new phone this is what I’d be looking at.

Canon 800dhttps://ebay.us/Q0UV1z – the latest DSLR Canon 24mp camera, buy here to save.

Nikon Coolpix p1000https://ebay.to/37cORUV – We have the Nikon P900 and this is the new model. The zoom lens is unbelievable and so awesome when travelling and you want to capture photos from a distance.

Lenses

Canon 50mm lens – https://ebay.to/3nx5pyG  This is the lens I use the least, ideal for still, close up shots.
Canon 24-105mm lenshttps://ebay.us/br9MeO – This is my all round, everyday use, zoom lens. Amazing quality, great price.
Canon 70-300mm lens – https://ebay.to/33xYeht – I use this one a lot for long range shots.
Sigma 10-20mm lenshttp://ebay.us/zWvfuI  – My wide angle lens for all my inside photos & video plus lots more, love this lens.

Our Go Pro 9 Hero Black – https://ebay.us/6CQOVC  –  is an awesome piece of equipment. I use this for all underwater, action video and some general use. Buy here brand new and great value.

Mavic Pro Platinum Drone – https://ebay.to/2ARPxTo  This is an absolute ripper of a drone. The Fly More Combo will provide you with everything you will need. I use this for all my aerial footage and this price is well below other retail stores.
