Mackay Caravan Park at Bucasia Beach

Bucasia Beachfront Caravan Park

The first time we arrived in Mackay looking for a Caravan Park to stay we had our dog MACKS with us and wanted somewhere on the beachfront.

We found the Bucasia Beachfront Caravan Park and despite a few midges and it’s basic facilities we really came to enjoy it.

Macca and Patty, the Park Managers, are as good as they get and provide a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy your stay.

Our favourite Mackay Caravan Park Managers

Every Thursday night at the Bucascia Beach Mackay Caravan Park was cook up on Macca and we’d all tell yarns, have a few drinks and be joined by the possums as they’d come to say hello.

Our Golden Retriever MACKS loved the beach and would run and swim for hours.

Matt and Kev went fishing with limited success but Macca would go out at night and come back with some very nice fish.

MACKS swimming at Bucasia Beach

There is a boat ramp right next door where you can launch your boat and head out to many of the beautiful islands including Brampton Island, Keswick Island and St Bees Island.

The park is located right beside a large park with play areas for kids.

Bucasia Beach is an easy driving distance to the shopping precinct.

This Mackay Caravan Park was definitely a favourite of ours on our Big Lap, so we couldn’t wait to return and stay once again which we did.

Mackay Caravan Park Bucascia Beach Facilities

The Bucasia Beach Mackay Caravan Park has a great pool which has been recently renovated and was perfect for cooling off on those hot North Queensland days.

There’s a covered BBQ area with seating where you can also access the park’s Free Wifi. Lorikeets will often join you here during the day.

There are sites along the front with fabulous views overlooking the ocean and islands.

This Mackay Caravan Park provides powered slab sites with water hook up and a dump point is also on site.

Is the Bucascia Beach Mackay Caravan Park Pet Friendly?

The Bucasia Beachfront Mackay Caravan Park is pet friendly and therefore dogs are welcome. Macca even looked after MACKS while we went to Cape Hillsborough National Park.

An aerial view of the Bucascia Beach Caravan Park Mackay

We had excellent phone coverage with all of Telstra, Optus & Vodafone networks.

A great feature of the Bucascia Beach Caravan Park Mackay is kids under 12yo stay for Free.

There is a creek and mangroves nearby and therefore Midges are common here. Use repellents and wear suitable clothing to stay covered where necessary.

You can read all about preventing midge bites and how to treat bites here.

TThursday night cook up at the Bucascia Beach Caravan Park Mackay

Cost to stay at the Bucascia Beach Caravan Park Mackay was $45 per night for ocean view sites. It is cheaper to stay in the other areas of the park.

Prices range from $30 a night for 2 adults in a powered site to $45 a night depending on location within the Caravan Park and it being peak or off season.

Our stays were 31st March – 20th April 2016 and 11th June 2018.

Apologies for the video being a little shaky, not sure why, but did my best to fix it.

A real feature is at sunrise when the kangaroos and wallabies come down on to the beach to feed on mangrove pods washed up to shore.

With Wedge Island just off the beach and a magnificent sunrise it makes for spectacular viewing to start the day.

Once the kangaroos leave take a walk up top of the mountain to see the views from several lookouts, all offering a different amazing landscape to witness.

Stroll along the beach and discover the rocks and caves or take a walk over to Wedge Island at low tide.

Cape Hillsborough really is a beautiful area worth visiting.

Kalbarri Camping at Murchison House Station with MACKS
Visiting Kalbarri with our Golden Retriever MACKS

Are the Kalbarri Caravan Parks Pet Friendly?

Kalbarri Anchorage Caravan Park, Murchison River Caravan Park and Kalbarri Tudor Holiday Park all allow pets on a seasonal basis.

Pets are allowed at Kalbarri Red Bluff Tourist Park. Dogs are also welcome at both Murchison House Station and Big River Ranch Kalbarri.

As we arrived in Kalbarri during September School holidays, our choice of a Kalbarri Caravan Parks was limited as we were travelling with our Golden Retriever MACKS.

At the time there were only 3 caravan parks as Kalbarri Red Bluff Tourist Park did not exist.

This meant we were unable to book into any of the Kalbarri Caravan Parks as they don’t allow pets during school holidays.

You can also choose to do a tour of Mossman Gorge as part of an exciting day trip from Port Douglas that also includes visiting the Daintree and Cape Tribulation.

Take this tour in comfortable Mercedes vehicles with just a total of 11 guests which includes morning tea, a gourmet lunch, 4 scoops of delicious ice cream at the Daintree Ice Cream Company plus full on board commentary so you don’t miss a thing.

Catching Barra at Hook a Barra

Hook-a-Barra

Have fun catching the prized Barramundi at the local Hook-a-Barra.

Hook-a-Barra is a salt water fish farm which breeds Barramundi to be supplied to restaurants all over the country.

We had a great time fishing the ponds with thousands of Barra and learning the art of catching these highly sought after fighters.

Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery

Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery

We visited the Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery and were delighted at the Tropical Fruit wines that were available.

We tasted some fabulous wines, some Fortified wines and a Port. There’s even a Chocolate Fortified wine which was great.

The winery is in Mossman at 417 Shannonvale Road.

Just 25 minutes south from Port Douglas is the award winning Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures tourist attraction.

See Salt Water Crocodiles, Cassowaries, Koalas, Wombats and so many more incredible Australian animals.

Where to Eat out in Mossman:

The Exchange Hotel

We enjoyed a fabulous dinner at the Queensland Heritage listed Exchange Hotel in Mossman during our first stay.

First established in 1896 the Exchange Hotel in Mossman was damaged by several cyclones. In 1934 a cyclone once again casued significant damage and a new Exchange Hotel was built and opened in 1935.

We enjoyed an excellent Pub meal and our favourite drinks on tap and watched as the long sugar cane train passed by outside the window.

Beechwoods Cafe

The Beechwoods Cafe is a great spot for breakfast or lunch which excellent coffee and juices and a range of food available.

It is located at 13 Front Street in Mossman.

5 Essentials – Outside RV Accessories

  1. To plug your RV with standard 15amp in to standard residential 10amp power source you will need a converter. We love our waterproof Ampfibian and after over 4 years it’s still perfect.
  2. Most people carry a Generator for back up power. 4wd Supacentre has a good low cost and popular generator while the Yamaha 2000w is a robust yet quiet excellent performer.
  3. A 20m 15amp Power Lead will ensure you reach your power source in Caravan Parks and Campgrounds.
  4. You will want a good blue Drinking Water Hose. Your typical green garden hose is not suitable for drinking from.
  5. A 4 way tap handle will help you find water whenever you need it

The strong german influence can still be seen in the restaurants, cafes, pubs, bakeries, small goods and stores selling cuckoo clocks and hand crafted leather.

A range of other stores also make Hahndorf a shopper’s and foodie’s delight!
